1937 S-Class
« on: January 14, 2009, 08:55:50 PM »
OK - For Sale on Boat Trader is a very nice S-Class, with the stated build date of 1937 out of Bourne, MA. No Hull # or Hull Name. I went through the registry and the only "S"'s around that time frame (contract date) that are found are Tern (1419) and Misty (1385); neither are near Bourne. What do you think - am I missing something?

Misty was at IYRS to be restored in 2007.  I don't think that project is finished (or started) ... another question for Warren.  Tern has been for sale.  It was on Long Island.  This could very well be the boat, and the owner chose to move it to a different yard for a fresh market.  The other boats that it could be are 1414, 1416, 1417, or 1418.  The other 1937 S, 1415, was destroyed.

Well looky-here... Have we "found" WAWIS # 1414?

From Tom - (I assume he is the broker - not the owner - but I'm waiting to hear back on some details):

Hello Adam,

The hull # is 1414 and she is in excellent condition, just completed a
re-varnish and complete paint job.

What do you have for trade?

Thank you for your interest!

Regards,

Tom

I'm still waiting back for a reply from Tom .... I'm heading down that way for Lunch today and may stop by to see the hull. I'd like to know who the owner is - as well as her history - and see that plate that definitively says #1414.....

Please ... full report required.  Boat location, owner name, real hull number, the whole works   :)

Hull #1414s is pretty well documented and certainly was alive in 1993:

"Herreshoff "S" Class Hull #1414
1937-40 Wawis W.E. Janney Jr. Quissett Fe, Nbes
 Onward Vinyard Haven, Ma
1946-49 Musketeer Tom Hunt Narr. Bay
1950-86 Musketeer Russell R. (Bud) Hunt Jr. Narr. Bay
1987-90 Musketeer Josh Bordoux
1993- Musketeer David Peterson Mattapoisett, Ma" (Source: Upham, Kenneth B. "History and Register of the S-Boat." Privately printed, 1994.)

The last owner in Upham's provenance, Dave Peterson, is a builder in Mattapoisett.  I assume he owned it in order to restore and resell.  I have worked with Dave in the past, and have had it on my to-do list to contact him about Musketeer.  We also may be able to find out the current owner from the broker.

OK.... Did we hit pay dirt....

Spoke with Tom (Duce). Super nice guy - he is the owner of WAWIS (MUSKETEER) as well as the boatyard she's in (Cape Marine in Bourne - Cape Side). He bought her off David Peterson 3 or 4 years ago and has been meticulously maintained and restored. The resto sounds like a SUPER job by both Tom and David - she is one of only 6 S's with this particular watertight cockpit compartment. In fact so unusual that they had to get copies of the original plans for this particular model from Gordo (brings up memories of our CCSB legal conversations) to do the resto. Plate remains with I believe the Hunt family, but David and Tom fabricated a copy for the hull. So we can certainly place this one as FOUND. I'm going to head down and take a look at her maybe this week and intro myself to Tom. She sounds like a real buy for someone - and she’s being splashed and sailed again this year regardless of whether he sells her or not - cudo's to Tom!

Now for the rest....
At the same time they did this restoration, they did Hull #1119 (SEA DOG) - Tom owned both. She is now owned by the Rodney family out in MV (Chappaquiddick) (Darra and Keith) - that resto was hugely expensive because of her condition; it sounds like a barn fell on her while in storage. Also done by David.... She is now named RESOLUTE. We can list her as FOUND.

Around the same time David also restored one of the R-Class Herreshoffs - but Tom didn't have much other info. Puffin is the only one listed in the Registry as Found, and we all know about Scapa (May Be). Sounds like someone needs to call David    :) .

Hopefully Tom joins us here - he's a real nice guy and an absolute purist - even Jon would approve!

Tom just called me back - He remembered that name of the R-Class - GAME COCK. I should have checked the registry better - She's listed as "Found" with David as the restorer....
