Fred Herreshoff (1887-1920) was the son of John Brown Francis Herreshoff, a famous chemist working out of Brooklyn. He is not to be confused with John Brown (JB) Herreshoff, the founder of the boatyard. JB was named after the merchant John Brown of Providence.
John Brown Francis was named after Governor of Rhode Island John Brown Francis, a grandson of John Brown and first cousin once removed of Captain Nat and his brothers. Fred became a nationally famous golfer who competed both in America and Britain from about 1908 to 1918. He was a broker and married to a woman in the show business.
