Adam:  Do you know when and from whom Halsey acquired RUGOSA, or anything else of its prior ownership?

Thanks,

-Steve

1986, from a gentleman in Florida.  Nobody seems to remember his name though.

Thanks.

The reason I ask is that I recieved an email from the wife of a man named Stockton (Skip) Gordon Barnett who used to crew on it out of City Island in the 1950's.  Years later, he and his wife were in Daytone Beach in 1985 and saw it there.  Apparently, it belonged to the harbor master, who had bought it in NYC and sailed it to FL to restore it.  She indicated that her husband sent some negatives and a letter with information about the boat at that time ... it may be in the Museum files.  Halsey must have bought her from that harbor master.

Sounds plausible.  Apparently the harbor master did not achieve much of the restoration he planned.  The sail from FL to Bristol, I hear, was quite the adventure...

I met an ex-captain, who lives in CT, last summer and have his info if you would like to contact him.

Adam / Steve,

Some details on Rugosa ownership.
In 1974 I became a 1/4 owner in Rugosa.  The owner at that time had purchased her from a man from the Tampa area.  Our partnership and experiences restoring and sailing Rugosa provided memories to last forever. Our sailing was in the Bahamas and Caribbean. In 1981 we sold her to some Swedes. I believe Halsey may have purchased her from them.
Rugosa was an amazing sailboat. I was very pleased to hear of Halseys purchase and visited Rugosa in Bristol in 1991 when restoration was in full swing. She needed work that was beyond our pocketbook.  What better owner or place for her to be.

- grateful and proud former owner

I lived aboard Rugosa in Lucaya from March to May 1973.  Had delivered a Dickerson 35 for owners and connected with Rugosa for ride back to US.  Owner was Jay (sorry, don't remember last name, maybe the logs survived and can tell more).  He had a boat with no crew and I had a bag of food. He said he had bought her in Detroit in 1968, sailed to west coast US and was returning to sell her in Florida.  I remember the gimballed saloon table, 2-man hoisting the main on wire reel winch, the speed and power.  We had one of the sweetest rides crossing the Stream to Florida, we were in Los Olas Bight for a few weeks and boat sold for reported 25k :o.  This seems to fit the 'In 1974 I became a 1/4 owner in Rugosa' discussion.  I returned to Canada shortly after that, lost track of Jay, and spent 22 years in marine industry.  I've sailed plenty of boats from 15' to 96' and can truthfully say they don't build them like they used to.
