Mahogany restoration advice needed
« on: January 15, 2010, 04:17:33 PM »
I am currently working on restoring the mahogany cabin bulkhead (7/16" genuine mahog t&g, ) and molded shear strakes for FI23 Crusader #1225. I've stripped the remaining finish and will fill old holes with thickened epoxy.  These holes will be redrilled, fastened and plugged with slightly larger bungs upon reinstallation of the pieces. I will scarf in new wood to repair significant damage but don't know what to do with small flaws such as nail holes, checks and other black water marked areas. Can these black marks be bleached in some manner? If not I will accept these as "character" marks testifying to her vintage.  We want the boat to look as clean as possible while using the vintage materials. Decisions, decisions!
Thanks,
John

Hi John.  Everyone has an opinion.  Mine is that, if you do a good job restoring the surface, the dark marks, checks, etc., are part of the patina.

Aloha John,

First, congratulations on making it to the Herreshoff Regatta in August, you made the recent issue of Current

Steve is spot on, it is part of the patina that says Crusader has weathered more than just the years.  Your 80 year old grandmother can still be beautiful, but you wouldn't want her wearing a teenager's get up, would you?

You might wish to consult the bible on wood refinishing, Rebecca Brightman's BRIGHTWORK The Art of Finishing Wood.  Brightman covers mahogany, the different types, and getting rid of the black water stains.  Strip first, repair joints and holes, remove or choose to live with the stains, seal, sand, first coat, sand, second etc.

Holes can be filled with epoxy thickened with wood dust from the coaming or other similar wood taken down.

Generally, the mahogany doesn't like to give up its stains.  Good luck.

That book is out of print, but I got a hard-cover version on eBay.  It is simply the best book on the subject.  Period.

Thanks for the help folks.  After 3.5 yrs of work I'm thrilled to have CRUSADER back on the water.  She needs more varnish but shows off her 80 yr old vintage well.  We enjoyed racing in Bristol with Amorita and Arion recently and now the boat is in our barn near Lake Placid , NY.  CRUSADER will sail northern Champlain next season out of Plattsburgh, NY.
Thanks again for the advice and encouragement!

Got my copy from Amazon used a year or so ago.  There is also a companion volume paperback.  Here's the link--$20 and up.  Don't be afraid of used.

John, I was really hoping for more pictures from that beautiful lake near Pittsburgh this year with the leaves turning in the background...

The leaves aren't turning on the lake yet... SOON!  Next year we can rendezvous with Mashnee and a few wood 12's and my Doughdish!
