Herreshoff 12 1/2 for sale
« on: June 05, 2009, 03:17:42 AM »
My friend Jay Crowley has reluctantly decided that it's time for her 12 to go to a new home. The boat is "Ding Hao" and was bought new by her father in 1825 or 6. She's the next hull number to Halsey's Rugosa. I haven't seen her in years and I imagine she's pretty tired. She was in the water maybe 10 years ago.

Jay's children and grandchildren aren't interested, so she figures the last thing she can do for the boat is find it a good home.

Bill:  I have added her to the list of boats for sale.  I get frequent calls about boats in this list, so let's see what happens.  Do you have any idea of asking price?  If you get a chance to snap a photo, it may help.  Should I refer callers to Ms. Crowley or you?

I've noticed you get quit a bit of "Guest" traffic on the for sale board. I wonder do folks realize you keep a "list" also on the main registry page? Also, I wonder if a quick e-mail over at WBF that your list has been "updated" might also get some interest.

It's really something for a family to own a boat for so long. What provenance!

I am going to send out one of my twice-yearly email distributions telling folks about new features and the like shortly.  Do you think I should expand the "For Sale" list from 12's to all HMCo sailboats?  Easy enough to do, just a bit more difficult to vet the list.

Well since this is no longer just the 12.5 registry - and I do enjoy making more work for you (with the plus of possibly having to go to your Son for help... 8) ) - I Say YES.

I was wondering if this 12 1/2 is still offered?
I am considering restoring a 12 1/2 soon.

This one has been sold.  Check out the "For Sale" list, and let me know if anything there interests you.  Send me an email wiht your requirements and I will try and match you up with one of the available ones that is the closest match.

Hey Steve,
I already looked at the classifieds. I am looking for an original that needs allot of "craftsmanship" or restoration. We have had a few wooden boats so hopefully I am up for the task.
Altair was a Billy Atkins double ended cutter. We cruised and raced her throughout southern California. I owned her for 9 years before passing her on to her new owner.
Our last boat was a Rhodes 29. We won allot of hardware with her, owned her for 18 years and lived aboard for 13 years. "SPARTAN" required the normal restoration work that an older wooden boat would.
I am stating this so that someone with an "heir loom" would take me serious. I believe that a 12 1/2 would be a great project and most likely our last sailboat.

I forgot to clarify the "SPARTAN" was 42'3" on deck, the waterline was 29

Most of the 12s have had some work done to them already.  The project boats tend to get snapped up pretty quickly.  Not having seen all of them, my understanding would be that the one in Maine for $12,900 and the one in New York for $17,500 are the closest to what you are looking for.  Where are you located?  What is your price range?

I am in Southern California.
The amount of the project will have depend on the project. Even if I could afford to pay for a "restored" boat I would much rather put the sweat equity into it. Having just said that, I would need a boat that could make the trip or I would have to stabilize it first.
The boat must be an original Nat built.

What about a Marlin or Fish? There are several that fit the description.

The Marlin and Fish classes look a little larger than I was wanting. How about trailering these?
Would you believe the prices for Slips here in So Cal? Dana Point is around $350.00/month and Newport Beach is way more for a slip. Moorings in Newport Beach are selling for about $1,000.00/foot for the right to lease.

The Marlin/Fish are 20' 9" and a 7' and change beam so they would be trailerable. But if your thinking of launching via trailer you are correct - you'd need a crane. However, I don't think of a 12 1/2 as launchable via trailer either.

I am a marine surveyor. I recently inspected a "plastic" version of the 12 1/2. I found the 12 1/2 to be very "shippy" for it's size. The more I looked the more I came to like the design. I just don't know if I could stand to own an FRP version after owning an Atkins and then a Rhodes.
They did launch the 12 1/2 so that I could get a look at her while afloat. This still doesn't mean much but it is an interesting concept.
