Source of Bronze Fittings for 18' HA/Pilot/Scout Series?
« on: July 08, 2013, 08:20:10 PM »
The Herreshoff 18' HA/Pilot/Scout models used a number of bronze fittings for deck and underwater applications.  I suspect that with as many HA-18's still floating around, there must be a source for these fittings.  Is there a place to go to acquire NW or Squadron Yachts built parts?  Is anyone keeping up with 18-footers that are being parted-out?

I am specifically looking for the bronze strut that is attached to the skeg of a Scout and forms the pivot for the rudder base.  Appreciate any leads or sources!

Most of the typical Bronze hardware - blocks, cleats, etc. look like typical Bristol Bronze type stuff - so you should be able to replace what you need through them, Spartain Marine, or if you want to upgrade try Reineck. The skeg will be far more difficult - If I remember folks that had to replace had them fabricated. I think I remember a foundry in Washington state that did some - Maine as well....You can try to find one locally that will cast in marine Bronze. Call Herreshoff designs and see if they have the actual specs for the piece you could take to the foundry....

they have Herreshoff casting & is a great resource for hard to find parts. Hope this helps........

Thanks Adam,

I did call Bristol Bronze and they were the firm that supplied both N&W and Squadron Yachts with bronze castings for the 18' Series and other Herreshoffs build in RI.  They did have the casting mold for the strut, so it's just a matter of coughing up the $350 for a new one!  I'll also check with Port Townsend Foundary to see if they have one in their cellar.

Thanks for everyones input, nice to know we can keep these old hulks sailing along through the years.
