Is this 50 metre , 400 ton  schooner  based on a Herreshoff ,and if so which one .

I'll bite....i'd say INGOMAR with that under body and shear. Though two others QUEEN and the America's Cup 90 footer sloop RESOLUTE which was rerigged as a schooner had similar hull shapes.

Not Resolute.  1914 build 75' waterline.  Dimensions would be helpful.

the largest Herreshoff was Katoura, 115ft waterline weighing at 313 ton GT, and I would expect her displacement to be significantly less.

He said "based on" a herreshoff schooner not an exact replica - so I took it for the overall design shape not specs. I'll still stick with INGOMAR as the one...

the spec says 50 x 8.4 beam x 5.6 metres draft , waterline 33 metres,
402 tons

Ahhhhh... now i see... Yes the unbuilt schooner for Emp. William of Germany (1904)...These are the exact specs:

LOA: 161' (49.07m)
LWL: 110' (33.53m)
Beam: 28' (8.53m)
Draft: 18' (5.49m)

This design was also based on INGOMAR.

I don't believe so - she would have been riveted nickel steel as with all the large Herreshoff schooners. I believe the largest composite schooner he did was VAGRANT which was around 75' (1910) - but I may be wrong.

Adam:  At the Symposium, Halsey told the story of a German nobleman who asked NGH to build him a large boat.  Upon completion of the  design, NGH was asked to reduce the draft as the client's harbor was not deep enough to accomodate the design.  NGH refused because he felt it would harm the sailing characteristics, and replied "I suggest you dredge your harbor".  Is this the boat we are talking about?

Hi Steve - Yes it is. NGH designed her to 18' - then the Keiser asked him to make it 15 feet I think as the harbors in the Baltic were not deep enough. I believe NGH actually did send a modified drawing with the updated depth – but the Keiser wanted a guarantee that she would still be faster than METEOR and INGOMAR. NGH responded that no the shorter keel would make her slower upwind – then he suggested it might be best to dredge the harbors than mess with his designs. Needless to say the Keiser canceled the order.   :o  ;)

At a smaller scale is this is the first J Class to be designed for 75 years,37 metres ,173 tons
