H28 for sale
« on: February 04, 2014, 12:02:14 PM »
Saw this listing on eBay this morning. I hope someone can save her. Looks like a real project but probably can be had really cheap. I'm a little confused by the date 1958. Obviously not an original H?

There are no "original" HMCo. H-28's. They were never built by HMCo....They are an L.F.Herreshoff design from around 1943. The design was featured in a series in Rudder Magazine during the war years- and its been said that thousands of GI's went to battle with dogged copies in their packs dreaming of building when they returned to the states - which seems to be true as the plans sold like hot-cakes after the war. I believe one of the earliest ("Nebula" ) was for sale on E-bay about 6 months ago in seemingly very nice shape. Several manufacturers have put the H-28 in production over the years - Kenner, and Cheoy Lee as examples - but most were home built (as LFH intended I believe).

Adam, that is very interesting. So L. Francis designed the H28 for anyone to build. Did Herreshoff collect any royalty or fee when the design was used?

To build one you'd have to order the plans - which only he himself sold....as he did with most of his designs. Unlike his Father (NGH), LFH didn't build his designs - he never owned a boat yard, or boat building facility - and only worked at HMCo. for a very short time at the beginning of his career. He was an independent designer (except early on where he worked for some design shops) and sold his designs to individuals and other boat yard/boat builders. His estate was still selling his plans long after he died as well - not sure if that is the case today - I think most of his stuff is at Mystic today....

Before you jump, you might want to read the article Adam refers to which can be found in Sensible Cruising Designs. it is a blast especially the line about "a world of warlords, politicians and fakers".

This boat does have the raised cabin and hatch that L.F. might not have approved of, but that gives it standing head room.  I think the birds will still carol over her in the right hands.

Go for it Nick!

From the looks of the photos, that boat is in for a lot of man-hours and money.  Of course if you are retired and need to stay out of the wife's way for a few years, maybe it's the perfect project.
The wife says I can have a mistress as long as her ribs are made from white oak.
