18' Herreshoff Scout
« on: August 01, 2014, 07:03:24 PM »
I have an 18' Herreshoff Scout and was wondering about the rigging and the masts.
Do the masts move back and fourth the seems to be at last one inch of space around where it enters the deck. Also the booms are both low do  the move up  or is it necessary to duck when coming about. Any rigging help would be appreciated.

Well I don't own one nor sailed one but I believe you need mast wedges. Most are wood, and they are easy to make - here are some commercial ones:

As far as Boom height - There are plenty of You Tube video's of scouts sailing - Seems to me you would have to duck a bit but not too bad...

I own a Scout (hull number 4) and I'm a pretty big guy who had trouble looking under the mizzen boom when navigating.  And my passengers in the salon cockpit really had to duck when coming about.  So last year, I constructed mast tabernacles (so I could fold down the masts for transport).

Since I had to cut the masts into 2 sections anyway (to install the tabernacles), I discarded the lower sections and replaced them with ~19" longer sections.  The net effect was to raise the sails (and booms) by 19".  For this to work, the tabernacle obviously has to be installed lower than boom height.  I've sailed it for a whole season in some pretty stiff wind with no problems.  Much more comfortable for me and my crew.

And yes, you need wedges to shore up the masts.
