What's in a name?
« on: May 19, 2015, 02:19:48 AM »
Can you help me find my boat's original name/owner?

I am the happy owner of a Herreshoff America, Hull Number 10, sailing out of Scotland Beach, Maryland (Chesapeake Bay).  She is a delight to sail, but has been begging for a little TLC.  In addition to cleaning and restoring her hull, bright work, painting the hull, etc., I thought I would try to restore her original name.  The Catboat Book Published in 1973, (John M. Leavens, ISBN 0-87742-034-3) shows thirteen Herreshoff America Catboats (see below), including their current owner and name at the time of publication.  Are you able to assist me in identifying the original owner (and possibly the original name) for Hull 10?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide!

It would be very difficult - or nearly impossible - to figure out which HA hull yours is unless we had some underlying identifier - like a HIN#. In cases like this your best bet is to do good old fashion foot work - try to contact the last owner, see if they have any paperwork (old registrations, bill of sales - even word of mouth) and work your way back through the owners. Not sure there is any other way. You could call Com-Pac (who currently own the molds) or the last real builder - Nauset Marine - and see if they have any of the old records for N&W (I assume yours was built by them and not Squadron?) and see if they know who the original owner/purchaser was - see if it ties out to  Leavens book. Lastly you might see if your hull is listed with the Catboat Association - see if you can follow owners back through that org - assuming past owners were members...
