I am purchasing an eagle 22 and need to know the optimal horse power and shaft length for an outboard for this boat.

Welcome,
"Optimal" is a choice word for engine size on a sailboat.
Decide on how you want to mount/use it: always hung off the stern, side mount, removed for racing, in and out of a tight marina only, port to port on a long quiet sound or bay, etc.
If you plan to regularly remove it, smaller is better--3 hp.
If you plan on using for longer runs, and leave it on the stern, up to 6 hp. Anything more is overkill.
The electric torquedo's are nice for compact size, thrust, and quiet.
Nice question, come back to the Herreshoff Forum as you progress.

I would like to replace my 2 stroke outboard in my Eagle with a four stroke motor and would like to know if anyone has any suggestion as to which motor works best. My current motor is an 8HP Nissan that'e very noisy and belches a lot of smoke into the cockpit. I tried replacing it with a 4 stroke Yamaha 8HP but the lower unit couldn't fit through the well. Any thoughts?
