Herreshoff Designs, the firm of Halsey Herreshoff and forum member Adam Langerman, is collaborating with builder Brion Rieff to build 3 new interpretations of NGH's Alerion III. Congratulations, Adam!
The press release: http://www.herreshoffregistry.org/forum/images/Herreshoff Designs Press Release Nov 16 2009.pdf (http://www.herreshoffregistry.org/forum/images/Herreshoff Designs Press Release Nov 16 2009.pdf)
And the boat:

Very nice - there are a few "new" things on the site - take the making of wood blocks and the "Herreshoff 20" - using NGH's Model 204. Adam L., was 204 never produced by HMCo.? She reminds me a a lot of the Sidney designed Herreshoff Gemini built by CCSB. Do you know if Sidney based his design on the same model #204?
See: http://www.capecodshipbuilding.com/site/specsheets/goldeneye.pdf
-
Adam: I believe model 204 was used for FANO, hull number 1133.
-
Wow - that is very cool - thanks Steve. So #204 is the basis for a whole bunch of designs out there. I've seen that model used for boats from 15' to 26'. Very interesting!
-
Thanks Steve! We're excited about this project and the opportunity to work with Brion again.
Yes, 204 is a nice shape and we've had some interest in an open boat of this size. FANO was built as an 'improved 12.5', but used a transom hung rudder instead of including the aft overhang in the model. The sail plan in our rendering is from an NGH sketch proportioned slightly to fit this length boat.
-
Adam, I wonder if you could post a photo of Fano? I have never seen one. Also, which plan was she built from? I only see four plans which reference her, and two of those are missing at M.I.T., leaving only a sail cutting plan and a somewhat strange rudder detail plan. Strange, because the title refers to a 11'-4" l.w.l. sail boat, while Fano was 14' LWL?
-
I haven't come across and pictures of FANO either. A blueprint of the construction drawing and the sail plan are part of the model room collection inventory.
-
Ah, thanks! And has the "Rudder for 11'-4" l.w.l. Sail boat" plan at MIT (64-108) which references #1133s Fano anything to do with her?
-
I remember seeing one of these getting finished in one of the shops in Bristol back in the late 70's or early 80's. One of the things that struck me was how well finished they appeared. It was as if Herreshoff workers picked up their tool and went back to work after a 40 year hiatus. Nice looking boats. I wonder if you could get a more "classic" rig and varnished spars?

Nice: That shot of the transom shows some well-done carpentry. How did you get the top shot ... through a keyhole?

Yes, the work is excellent. I don't know how they do it.

I love the color scheme.
Those blocks are gorgeous too ... where are they going ?
-
France - ELEONORA will have all Herreshoff Blocks once these are installed.

Is it true NGH once said "there are only two colors to paint a boat - White and Black - and only a damn fool paints a boat black." ?
I like it though.... ;D

The owner is aware of the above quote. It didn't bother him though...
I should have some launch pictures mid-July!

Two more in the hopper ... you guys are busy.
-
What is the build time to new? That seemed awfully fast! Will she be seen at the regatta?
-
Right now build time is about 5 months. Hoping to get it down to 20 weeks by hull #3. The Herreshoff Regatta is a question mark right now. She will definitely be at the Newport Boat Show, but hopefully will make it to Narragansett Bay before then as well.

5 months/20 weeks seems amazingly fast for a wood hull - is it significantly less for a fiberglass version? I can't imagine so.
Beautiful bronze hardware - Reineck?
Are 1-3 sold or are they being done on speculation?
If I wear my long overcoat, sunglasses and Groucho 'stash, can I pose as a perspective buyer and get a sail?
-
You would be surprised how fast the cold-molded hull goes together. The largest difference is in the fairing / finishing time. For my money the difference in finished product is worth so much more than any difference in labor time. I spent a few thousand miles sailing some very high-end composite (carbon fiber and fiberglass) yachts this winter and spring and the experience simply did not compare to being on a cold-molded or plank-on-frame boat.
Yes, J.M. Rieneck hardware.
#1 and #2 are sold, #3 will be on the boat show circuit next winter (unless it sells this summer, in which case #4 will be on the show circuit)
Adam: you're welcome to sail anytime! No overcoat required...

it looks like this Alerion 26 was previous named "SAGE" and is now ''Lulie''.... ? Adam are these two differance boats or the same ?
-
I read somewhere that many boats were designed based Alerion 111 I could be mistaken on which models but I believe it was called the Fish Class 12.5, 21' Fish, Buzzard bay 14, Buzzards Bay 25 and possibly the S boat.
Robert
-
The 12 1/2 and the Fish were both built from the same half-hull. The BB25, Nat's favorite design, was a different model. It has a similar hull shape with a hollow bow, but also a centerboard . The S boat is entirely different, and the BB 14 is a modification of the 12 1/2 designed by L. Francis
Herreshoff, not Nat.
-
Thanks Steve, Your probably more accurate than I. It was several years ago when I read it

I do not see boomvangs on any of these Alerions. Nor adjustable backstays.
Is it a cultural no-no to put a vang on a Herreshoff? How about an adjustable backstay? Mast bend control affects sail shape and upwind performance.
Most Herreshoff yachts are fractionals, whereas the S Boats have the running back and check stays to control bend, their boom extends to the transom and the vessel lacks a backstay. Also, I see some of the Alerions have booms that extend beyond the transom and some do not.
Can someone shed some light on this?

-
Regarding the Alerions, they were never intended to be a class when originally designed. "Alerion" was Nat Herreshoff's personal sailboat, and he designed it for himself to sail in his later years. It is now on display in the small boat shed at Mystic Seaport.
Mass production boats started with the cold-molded, Gunter rigged boats built on Nantucket in the late 1970's. A while later, Halsey Herreshoff drew up plans for a full-keel boat like those pictured above. As they aren't really considered one-designs, they can be made with a multitude of rigs from a Gunter, to a Gaff, to a Marconi to I suppose a wish-bone.
As regards to a Boom-Vang, I suppose it all depends on the rig. I have one on our 12 1/2, but we can't use it while racing. Still, it's a handy thing to have in sloppy conditions off the wind.
Jon 8)
-
The Nantucket boats came after Halsey's full-keeled version, which was designed / built for the last private owner of Alerion III, Isaac B. Merriman. The story is told here: http://herreshoffdesigns.com/HA26_Soundings_Article.pdf
Adam L
-
I stand corrected! I still like the full-keel version better...
Jon 8)
-
Thank you Adam.
That is an interesting history on how the boat got back into production and I can see now it was not intended to be a production one design class. It pops up from place to place with PHRF ratings and I presumed there was a standard configuration.
The first two Alerion's were fin keelers, any drawings or pictures available?

Ouch. No pads under the boats stands, and no chains. Not a good practice.
But an awful lot of stands... on the port side anyway. ;>

Cardinal Joe & Adam,
If you have any interest in the rudder configuration, I may be able to shed some light on the topic. I own this boat, 1979 hull #2. As far as I can tell the spade rudder was done by the first owner on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The boat hailed from the Northern Peninsula, Michigan and then returned to Maryland. The boat is now in New England. The last owner added a shaft log and an electric power plant. I hope to learn more through Halsey Herreshoff and some other folks that might be in the know. As I learn more I'll keep posting. The boat is now named ARUNDEL and is moored near #8, RASCAL.....to be continued
