" Flower Pot " - Boston Whaler 13 ft ! Well another Project / Restore this old ( maybe early 60's ) Hull # ? Was going to become a backyard Flower Bed ! So, Capt. Mike purchase this baby for $ 350.00 . It needs a lot of work , but I'll keep updating his BW 13 as we start working on her !

The hull is definitely pre-1974. I think that was the first year for the off-white interior. Previous hulls had you blue interior. But on the bright side, those hulls came with a LIFETIME WARRANTY! ::)

Flower Pot Hull # 7648 which is around 1962 ! I first thought it was Hull # 48 which would be 1958 , but it still a find for a BW 13 ....

Well ,big question is the hull dry or is it water logged? It is DRY .....
Barrier Coated & Paint the bottom and AWLGRIP the boat with White paint.

Hey Joe don't give away Captain Mikes secret method of applying varnish. I've never seen that done before but it does look really good and saves a lot of time. He did the sailboat deck the same way. I'm old school and use the old brushing technique but want to give the new technique a try on my 13 whaler when the time comes.
That wood also looks so good because no other whaler around has burmease teak as seats they all just have mahogany. That teak is expensive and thats why the grain looks so good. I look at it as a whaler with a little taste of carolina in her.

This BW 13 has Gelcoat Cracking everywhere , yes she is a " WOODY " model! This old girl has been in dry storage for the last 5 + years . the hull is Dry and she is ready to be Restored !

Also -a very proven bottom......Formula 23 hull is the one that started it all such as regulator, contender, seavee, rampone just to name a few and Albemarle 24.................

Nope - I stand corrected - Formula 23 hull was first an Richard Bertram saw the Formula 23 running around the Miami area , an asked Ray Hunt to design a 30 footer for himself - Bertram 31 was born ....

not sure what your saying here...The Formula 23 was from 69 or 70, Hunt's design (The original Moppie) was from 60 or so (This is from Memory so I may be off a year or two but not much). Now Aronow ran a series of Formulas in the early 60's but I think they were all the under 21'ers....BTW I ran an early Seabird 23 (1970) which was slower but had a better entryway - far drier boat then the others. Gotta love OMC electric shift drives ;)

Adam - I email a old friend that use to work at the Bertram factory plant for years..... this is his email -
Tell the guy to go to the Bertram website history and it talks about Richard Bertram watching a 23 foot experimental boat with an experimental inboard outboard which later became the 23 formula and the outdrive became the volvo and mercruiser outdrive. This was all around 1958. Richard bertram liked the 23' experimental boat (23 formula) that he had Ray Hunt design him a 30 foot version which became the 31 bertram. it was the first Deep vee he ever saw it was actually a sailboat tender. Hunt was desingning his "deep Vee" well before 58. The 23 you mention was a Fiberglass prototype built by Dyer (of Dyer Dinghy's no less) - and was a HUNT design! Additionally Hunt experimented with similar designs as far back as at least the eary 50's.

"Bertram first encountered Hunt's experimental powerboats during America's Cup trials in 1958. He noticed a 23-foot, fiberglass prototype, designed to be a tender, slicing through the chop of Block Island Sound. Bill Dyer (who came in second in the legendary 1960 race) had laid up the fiberglass on the swift little tender. After running it himself. Bertram wrote, "Knifing through those six-foot seas at 30 knots, this little 23-footer stopped every sailor...in his tracks. No one had ever seen powerboat performance to approach it." Bertram was impressed enough to commission a wooden 30-footer from Hunt. The boat was finished in early 1960 and christened with a bottle of domestic champagne."
And from the history of Formula:
"This story began in 1965. It was during that year that Florida-based boat designer, Don Aronow, designed a 19' hull for offshore racing. But while the design proved extremely successful, Don continued to modified it until 1969, when he increasing its length to 23'. So began the original Formula Marine."

There is something about the 13' whaler....I don't see as many up here - deeper water I guess dosent make them as popular, but growing up on Great South Bay, next to a bicycle, this was the most popular mod of transportation before everyone could drive - and I be a close second at that. Certainly brings back memories...

This is my personal boat , that I restored for my grandson to go Flounder fishing in the back bays & go tubing up the river ...... I hope not to sell this boat , I hope some today my grandson will give it to his child.......
Well it is a 1969 Mako 19 Center Console .......The Deck is Soft and needs to be replace , 1 in.high of wet foam from the transom to just pass the center console ! Butt ends didn't meet the transom and are rotted need to be replaced and reconnected to the transom. Stringers are rotted only about 1/3 of the boat . New Yammi -115 hp 4 stroke - 25 in shaft , so I need to replace the 20in transom with a 25 in. - extra strong to handle the weight of the 4 stroke !

New Lights !
I wanted a differant style bow light ,so I ordered a STEALTH -L.E.D. Bow light & i hate those plug-in Anchor lights , so I did something out of the Norm. ,I placed it on the motor cover !

A lot of fly fishing/flats boats do that with the stern light...Definately out of the way...Question -did you have an issue with clearence on that fuel fitting?

I never saw that stern light on any other boat , but i do know that it is Not a legal anchor light...... because its needs to be seen 360 degrees from another vessel ..... I do not plan on anchoring up for the night , so its fine for me .
No Fuel issues ! However i could not put the fuel fill connection in the gunnel because of the boat being foam fill & the fuel vent is not on the outside hull ......
The fuel fill hose is under the front console seat & the fuel vent is on the starboard side of the center console ....

Bimini Top & Strata Glass Windshield
I angled the Bimini top forward ,instead of behind the CC, so it wouldn't be in my way when fishing ! Also added hard Strata ( EZ2CY ) Glass Windshield instead of the Soft Plastic , because of the Hot summer day's , the soft plastic would be harder to see out of !

Live Well & Locking Storage Seat - I used a full length SS piano hinge, instead of just two smaller SS hinges to mount the Starboard seat's !

I had to change the first prop to a small pitch to get the RPM's up to around 5800 to 5900 . That is about 37 to 39 MPH , my boat is a very Heavy boat it could use a 150 HP motor ! Photo's are of bottom prep for Barrier Coat & Painting .....

This is the other Mako 19 , that I use when in Southwest Harbor , Maine . it is owned by a family member and kept on a mooring ball in the Northeast Harbor .
So, how you know why I pick a Mako 19 to restore !

Well , I think I might have over reacted to this Nor'easter ( winds 20 to 25 knots ), high tide and when the winds are to turn East ...... Looks like a damm Lake at 6;30 pm this eveninng at South Jersey Shore .

Custom 1973 Aquasport 19.6 ft ( Project )
Started this 1973 Aquasort 19.6 ft project two years ago - All new hardware.motor,trailer and Custom Paint job & console,etc,etc, just found a new home down South - I would have keep this baby ,for myself , but the Gunnels were to low for my grandson, so i started the 1969 Mako 19 cc !!!!!!!!! I Lost the early pic's of this boat , but the Hull was White and the previous owner made a mistake of restoring the transom to 20 in, instead of a 25 in !

I had to add a Armstrong bracket to handle the New Yammi 115 hp 4-stroke motor which is 25 in.

Just found my 1973 Aquasport 19.6 for Sale in fla.

1972 Seacraft 20 Complete Restoration!!! - This Sea Craft is own by one of my restoration team worker's we restored it over the winter .....
lonesufer - Hi everyone I am posting my winter project which I have put alot of time and pride into this winter. I already have a brand new 140 suzuki 4 stroke ready to mount once shes done. The floor was raised 2 inches to make it self bailing deck especially with the 4 stroke weight. This boat was done right all epoxy resin used no cheap stuff (polyester not waterproof) Custom console more finish work than I thought to make it look good for the awlgrip paint. I could go on and on but pictures are worth a thousand words. Enjoy!!!! Oh and I'm 22 so I'm ahead of the game I think on my boat restorations hopefully this one will last me a lifetime!!!

New 47 gallon aluminum fuel tank installed the right way not foamed in. The tank has plenty of air around it to allow it to breath and is secured with neoprene strips supplied by SPtanks right in South Jersey. They supply tanks to all the big boys F&S boatworks being one. Fuel tanks should be foamed in as the foam traps water causing oxidation down the line.

I got alot done in the past couple weeks. Hull is painted, console mounted, motor hung today. Armstrong hatches installed on port and starboard rear access wells. These hatches are by far the best I have ever seen very easy to install no screws and they are very tight and the most waterproof hatches you can buy. I would highly recommend these. Pop up 6" cleats in rear installed and single 8" pull up cleat installed in bow. Teak helm pod in the making my father is making this for me as he's done quite a few. ordered my rubrail today white with stainless insert.

My dad has been working away on this helm pod for me. He went with alot of curve on the front to make it more custom but alot more work involved. Here it is needs a little more sanding on the edges then the finish work of epoxy and varnish coating. These pods really do set the boat apart from the rest which I was going for. If only I could get him to do a teak toe rail for me. Maybe next year! This helm pod was made right here in South Jersey too not on Harkers Island. I'm sure he'll build one for anybody who wants one made but I know they're not cheap.

I know all about the different resins my dad uses vinylester on his project boats. I like having more time to lay things up with epoxy and work with it as it doesn't kick that fast. The floor is wood that is glassed on either sides. The only right way to use wood in a boat is to use epoxy as it is waterproof. The wood is now waterproof and any hole that is cut is sealed with epoxy resin so there's no rot. The transom also has a wood core with a lot of glass and it is all waterproof since epoxy was used. The motor holes were drilled then coated with epoxy before motor was hung. This gave me the satisfaction of knowing the boat was safe from any water intrusion. I am going to be keeping this boat for a very long time so I wanted to do this one right and use the best materials. Same reason I chose Armstrong hatches over other ones I wanted the best product out there. I also chose the suzuki motor for the same reasons for their reliability and peace of mind. Exactly...... When I was in Maine at my wifes services I got talking to a guy(a cousin of her's) I sold one of my rebuilt Grady's too. I had rebuilt it 22yrs ago and the same guy still owned it. Told me was still solid as a rock.. He had to have the fuel tank replaced about 5yrs ago and the guy who did it charged him for 6 saw blades getting thru the deck. When I rebuilt them I used Luan 1/4" plywood, 3 layers on the deck with woven roven between each layer soaked in slow setting epoxy. It just about soaks thru the Luan before it kicks off. Transoms I used 6-7 layers with WR between each.. I called them 50yr transoms.
Polyester/vinylester resins kick off too fast...no soak time when you are working with plywood. This is also why I say marine plywood is just a waste of money. You still have to epoxy soak it if you want it to live in the wet. Plain old ext plywood uses the same exact glue's that MP does. Unless it's sealed neither will live. Luan is bone dry interior grade, but it soaks epoxy like a dry sponge.

I am slowly getting everything installed on the boat as its pretty much all custom and a pain as every hole has to be carefully cut where cleats, nav, lights, etc... go. The rubrail came out pretty good and is the best rubrail for this boat I believe. It really brought everything together. I have a leaning post on the way.

I might run it this summer without a bootstripe then add one later on. I wanted to farrow the bottom then paint it white or green probably gona go with green because it won't look as bad but white would look really sharp til it gets scum on it. I did not add any weight I wanted as much weight as possible out of it. The fuel tank is farther forward it stops at the front of the console and runs towards the bow. I am hoping it sits alright in the water. Anythings better than having wet feet or a non self bailing deck!

Hey Joe yea I figured if I'm going to this much work I should start out with a nice clean bottom and the Farrow System seems to be the best method of removing the old paint. The boats you guys have farrowed have come out great

Helm pod installed it took alot of work to get the seastar helm at the perfect height so you yo don't see the helm and just the shaft sticks through. The helm pod is going to be full removably for sanding and varnishing when needed. Now I just have to wire it up figure out the suzuki wiring and throttle cable install and it'll be ready. I am going to figure out something nicer for the elctronics inlay. I will probably make a starboard box that mounts in with teak trim around it. I also have to make a door for the bottom of the console. Also probably out of starboard not sure on that just gona make it as it goes and see what looks good.
