TPI Composites Marine Division (formerly Tillotson-Pearson Inc)
Marine Products , Warren, Rhode Island, United States

Since 1968 TPI has delivered cutting edge composite technology that has been pivotal in the development of many commercially successful products.

In the late 80’s, TPI identified a manufacturing process that consistently produces a superior quality, highly structural, large composite part while eliminating the harmful VOC emissions. This process is know as SCRIMP® (Seemann Composites Resin Infusion Molding Process). TPI purchased the rights and has been successfully SCRIMPing parts for more than 10 years.

Today TPI is using SCRIMP® technology in a variety of ways to produce products that meet our clients’ exacting design requirements. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Wind Blades, Poma-Otis People Movers and components for U.S. Military vehicles are just a few examples of TPI SCRIMP® technology in use.

In 2004, TPI Composites announced a new ownership team, Landmark Growth Capital Partners and TPI senior management. This exciting change has allowed TPI to capitalize on growth in the wind energy, transportation and military sectors.

James - do you have any pictures of your Herreshoff Scout ?
Would you please tell me why you wanted these pictures. I've owned
this sweet little boat about six months now and am interested in any
info you might have as well. The boat is located in Hudson Florida
and I live very near, in Spring Hill, Florida.
I have more pictures and would be happy to share them.
James

James - I'm posting your Herreshoff Scout 18 up on The Herreshoff Registry Website forum under Herreshoff America and Scout Models - what hull # is scout and Year ? Thanks Cardinal Joe

I thought that might me it. Her hull number is 740610. Now here's
the interesting story. I was born in 1944, June 10th or written a
more interesting way 440610. How could I not buy the boat if she was
completed on my birthday (June 10th), exactly 30 years after me.
Would you send me the link when you post the pictures to the website?

SOLD 10/29/08  Herreshoff 18 catboat, 1973, Belton, Texas, $8,700,

1973 Herreshoff 18 catboat

Length:18'
SAILS- One 2001 Cruising weight sail with two reefpoints and bronze hardware(nice)
UPDATES
Brand new fully glassed and epoxied cockpit floor. (very sound)
Bottom restored to orignal copper color.
Woodwork has been restored and is in good condition.
Rudder re-glassed as needed
new mast hoops (old ones included for spares)
8 hp YAMAHA, I'll gladly sell boat for less without motor, it's a good motor and I wouldn't mind keeping it.

"Load-rite" single axle trailer

This American catboat is a true classic, designed by the famous Herreshoff lineage. Catboats have beautiful lines that have been depicted by artists throughout history (ie.Winslow Homer). With a large wide cockpit, and a comfortable cabin, this boat makes other 18 footers look small and cramped.

Joe - Nauset   purchased the Harbor Pilot, America, Eagle and Scout molds from Squadron Yachts  in the early 80's. Nauset built a handful of Pilots,America's and Downeasters(Eagles), the Scout never went into production. The America molds were later sold and the Scout,  Downeaster and pilot molds were later scraped do to their poor condition.

So, what was the last Hull # of the Scout ?

18" Herreshoff Scout
« on: February 28, 2011, 01:53:58 PM »Quote ....Hello everyone, I have had a Herreshoff Scout for the last 5 years.  Unfortunately I may have to sell it soon because I may not have anywhere to keep it.  I've searched online for information, but have never been able to find out much about the boat.  The boat is a 1974 18" Scout with original sails.  It has an older model Johnson 6hp outboard.  If I recall correctly it is hull #  005.  I have a title for it.  This forum seems to have quite a few knowledgeable people.  Does anyone know what something like this is worth.  I don't know that I'll actually be selling it, but I'd like to have an idea what it's worth.  I live in Ocean County, NJ.  The boat doesn't have a trailer so I'd probably have to sell to someone locally or someone who has a trailer or can make arrangements to have it picked up with one.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.Report to moderator    Logged

Can anyone help me with the following questions I have regard my Scout "Freebird" pictured here.  I want to replace both my main and mizzen sails and need the original design measurements.  I know the square footage but I need the measurements because I am not sure if the sails on the boat are correct.
My second question is how do I repaint the booms and masts.  I wish they were wood but alas, they are not.
Final question.  Who manufactured the wheels on the scout.  I am looking to replace the long missing center cap?
Thanks so much.  This sight is a wonderful source of information.

James -I misplaced the measurements on the center hub of the destroyer wheel , can you give them to us again , and I'll find you a center cap for your Scout wheel .

The center cap measures 31/4".  I certainly would appreciate anything you can come up with that will fit.  Also, anything on the measurements of the sails?.  I don't want to just copy the existing sails since they may not be to original specs.  I'm trying to keep this boat in as near original specs as I can.  I think she is something special in her simplicity and I want to keep her "correct".
Thanks again,

James - You can call Herreshoff Designs and I would think they have the original specs for the Scott sail plan - 401-396-9971 or e-mail at info@herreshoffdesigns.com. Also, I believe the original sail maker was Thurstons in Bristol, RI - they can be reached at 401-254-0970.

Phil - the pictures are "hosted" on other sites - either your own, or a service such as Photobucket that Joe mentioned (I use Flickr myself...). Each picture you save to one of these service sites comes with its own "URL" (think of it as an address). When you make a post here and want to show a picture simply click the little picture button on the upper left and "{img][/img}" will appear. Put the URL (address) of the picture between the two ][ and picture will embed in your post.

10HP SABB Diesel

INTEGRITY IS BACK HOME (as published in Lakeland Boating on-line Magazine)

After twenty-five years, my little Integrity is back home surrounded by a set of very unusual circumstances.

Back in 1979 I had the opportunity of having a custom Herschoff cat ketch built by Squadron Yachts in Bristol Rhode Island, formally known as Noak and Williams.  She was only eighteen feet long, but with an eight foot beam she was a big boat.  The cat ketch is a rig that offers good handling with the opportunity of flying a mizzen staysail.  One of the more unusual features of this boat was the 10hp Sabb diesel with variable pitch propeller.  The builder really didn’t want to install this engine because of its weight and size, but it was what I wanted so he agreed to the installation.  As it turned out, he said the Integrity project pulled his entire shop together because of all the challenges and was voted by his people as the best project ever completed.  The Integrity was graced with teak trim, a traditional teak wheel; hand carved teak name boards, teak blocks, bronze hardware and a custom set of sails built by Boston Sails in Mt Clemens, Michigan.  The sail loft was commissioned by the Welcome Restoration Committee to build a set of sails for their Great Lakes schooner project that was being built near the Mackinaw Bridge at the time.  Special canvas colored sail cloth was specified and I was fortunate enough to have the sails for the Integrity built from this same batch of fabric.  In addition to her main and mizzen sails, she had a mizzen staysail made as an American flag.  The luff edge of the sail had thirteen white stars on a blue banner and thirteen red and white stripes flowing toward the tack end of the sail.  When this sail was up, you cannot imagine the reaction from those on shore or passers by on their boats.  It was the signature of the Integrity.

I picked up the Integrity in the spring of 1980 and brought her to Michigan where we enjoyed her for two full seasons.  Then in the fall of 1982, we sold her to a gentleman who took her back to the East Coast only 100 miles from where she was originally built.  It was a sad day to see the Integrity leave our driveway for the last time, but we had a new Hans Christian on its way so the pain quickly dissipated once our new boat arrived.

As ones priorities in life change so did my ownership of sailboats.  We sold the Hans Christian in 1988 and for the next twenty years I was without a boat of any type.  My wife and I used to walk the channel in Grand Haven looking at all the boats while deep down I was yearning for another sailboat; but it had to be just the right boat, a different kind of boat with a lot of character and a lot of teak.   I liked the warmth of teak and didn’t mind taking care of it.  But boats of that type are not popular today.  Timing was never right so years just kept passing by and we just kept walking the channel.

Every Tuesday my dad, my son, and I meet at a local tavern for a pizza and a pitcher of beer.  My dad is 92 years old and has a lot of memories and stories to tell.  We really look forward to our Tuesdays and enjoy the time we spend together.  Several months ago during our pizza and beer night out, we got to talking about the Integrity.  My son was only five years old at the time we owned her and my daughter was eight.  He remembered the boat well and loved the little Sabb diesel.  It had a great sound…dung, dung, dung, dung.  It was music to my ears.  I mentioned that if I could ever find an engine like that, I would buy it.  “What would you do with the engine?” my son asked.  “Well, I would mount it on a pair of timbers and just start it up to hear it run, dung, dung, dung”.  My dad jokingly commented that I was nuts and living in the past. . . .

The next morning, my son called me at the office and said that he had found an engine on e-Bay identical to the one that was in the Integrity.  It was 25 years old, never used and in its original crate in a barn in Utah.  Wow, was I excited or what!  Brand new in a crate and built around the time the Integrity’s engine was built.  I had to have it, but how would I get my wife to support me in this wild request.  I didn’t need it but I wanted it.  My heart was pounding wildly, I just couldn’t believe it.  So that night I went home and checked out the e-Bay listing and there it was.  Now I had to broach this whole subject with my wife who was downstairs knitting on a baby blanket.  “Honey, you won’t believe what I found on e-Bay,” began the conversation and surprisingly, my wife said if that’s what you want then go for it.  Wow, now I had to put this deal together so I bid on the engine and went to bed all worked up, and hardly able to sleep.  The next morning I found that the engine was mine!  Needless to say I couldn’t send the payment in fast enough.  The engine would be here within a couple weeks.  I could hardly wait.

I started to think, wouldn’t it be cool if I could find a standard cat ketch built by Squadron Yachts and use the hull as the basis to recreate the Integrity.  I saved all of the documentation and had a lot of pictures of the original, so I could duplicate the Integrity.  It would take a lot of work, but I could do it.  I had the engine coming so one of the main pieces of the puzzle was in place.

As fate would have it, I found such a boat for sale just 60 miles away and called the owner to arrange a visit.  It was the same basic model, hull #4 built in 1974 and in reasonably good shape.  Integrity’s hull number was #27.  This local boat would make a great foundation for the project.   But wait; what if I could find the actual Integrity?  Would this be possible?  Is she still around?  I tried to find her several years ago but ran into dead ends.  I figured I had to give it one more shot before buying this project boat.

Where do I begin?  I had saved a letter that the gentleman who bought the boat sent me telling me how much he and his family loved the Integrity.  He included a couple of pictures, one of which was the Integrity with the mizzen staysail hoisted while tied up at the dock.  The envelope was dated 1986 and the return address was a city in Maryland so that is where I started the search.  As you would expect, he no longer lived at that address.

I figured because the Integrity was an East Coast catboat design it would most likely still be on the East Coast so I called the Maryland DNR marine waterway registration department.  The young lady that I spoke with really got into trying to help me once she heard part of the Integrity story.  I gave her the Integrity’s manufacturer hull number but it did not appear on her history of registered boats.  After further discussions, she asked me to repeat the fifth digit or letter of the hull number.  I told her it was a “5” and she tried the hull number using the letter “S” instead and BINGO, there it was and it was still listed to the gentleman that I sold the boat to.  Unfortunately the registration expired in 2002 which meant the boat was now out of state or sitting in a barn somewhere.  She was a great help because now I knew the hull numbers were transposed incorrectly when first registered.

I called a friend of mine in the insurance business and asked if he could check out the history of a particular vessel by searching its hull number.  That was possible and he too became enamored with the story of the Integrity and went to work trying to find her.

At the same time I called a yacht broker in Annapolis, Maryland to see if they could do a search for boats currently listed or listed in the past and try to find the Integrity through their sources.  The man I was talking with had a similar quest of finding a boat his father had owned.  So after hearing the Integrity story, he was anxious to dig in and try to help me with my request.

While all of these searches were going on, I decided to search for family members by using the internet.  Initially I was getting some information but nothing concrete so I subscribed to a more in-depth people search access by purchasing a $30.00 on-line package.   This access allowed me to search for family members, death certificates, siblings etc.  After some time I was able to develop a pattern of names and singled out three names that I thought might be family members.

I placed three messages on home voice recorders basically stating who I was and that I was trying to locate a small sailboat named Integrity that I sold to a certain gentleman from the East coast about 25 years ago.  I left my phone number and continued my search.  About 9:00 o’clock one Sunday evening I receive a call from an individual stating that he could not believe the message that I left on his recorder.  He basically said that I just hit a home run and that he knew me.  As it turns out, he was the son of the gentleman that bought the Integrity; and he was with his father when they picked up the boat in Michigan.

Needless to say we were both in a state of disbelief.  I asked if he knew where the Integrity was and he said, “I sure do, it’s still in the family.”  He indicated that his father passed away a few years back and his brother had the boat on Martha’s Vineyard.  We talked a while and he gave me his brother’s phone number but asked me to wait half an hour so he could talk to him first.  As a point of interest, his brother’s name never came up in my people search.

It was a long half hour before I placed the call and his first words were that he and his brother felt my call was like their father talking to them from the grave.  We chatted for quite some time about how the Integrity was such an important part of their family activities and how they all loved the boat.  There are five siblings and all of them had a special attachment to the boat.  There must have been something to what he was saying because it’s not too often that a boat stays with one owner that long.

Well, I nervously asked if there was any way that I could buy back the Integrity.  He could sense that I loved the boat, but indicated that the Integrity was not in the same shape that I remembered.  In fact, the boat was laid up waiting for some restoration.  He mentioned that during the 2005 Labor Day weekend, the Integrity sank at her mooring on Martha’s Vineyard during a freak storm and laid on the bottom for two days waiting for the waves to subside.  She had gone down in sixteen feet of water and the hull rested on her starboard side with the mast tips lying on the bottom.  There must have been a lot of movement because the hull and mast ends received many deep scratches.  Fortunately the bottom was not rocky but the sea shells that covered the sandy bottom chiseled away at the gel coat.  A barge was brought in and the Integrity was hoisted on board.    Upon examination it was determined that structurally the hull remained solid and the damage was only skin deep.

When the boat was raised, one of the yards on the Vineyard pulled everything out of the boat and gave it a thorough cleaning inside and out.  The Integrity had six large solid teak locker covers and an engine cover which were lost when she sank.  Most of the mechanical components were unusable including the instrument cluster and engine controls.  The little Sabb diesel had been pulled from the boat and scrapped, which broke my heart.  But remember…I just bought an identical engine two weeks earlier in Utah which was still on a truck being delivered.  Is that eerie or what!!

Terry said the timing of my call was incredible because he was in the process of deciding what to do with the boat.  Restoring the boat on the Vineyard was difficult because of ferry reservations and summer traffic.  He was contemplating trucking the boat back to Rhode Island to one of the Herschoff boat builders for restoration.  Once he realized that I was serious about buying the boat, he said he would poll the family to see what their feelings were on selling the Integrity. He would also go to the Vineyard and get some photos showing the damage and send them to me, and then get back to me within a couple of days with the family’s decision.  At this point, two days felt like an eternity.

As promised, he e-mailed me two days later with the news that each of the five siblings agreed that the Integrity should go HOME.  I was ecstatic and reread that sentence a hundred times.  The photos showed the damage to the boat, but she was in better shape than what I expected to see.  She looked a little bare with the missing teak covers, but there she was twenty-five years later, waiting to be taken home.   I wore the edges of the e-mailed photos frail looking at the pictures over and over and over again.

We purchased the Integrity and brought her back to Michigan.  The trip out east to pick her up will be something that I will remember for the rest of my life.  The first time I saw her on the Vineyard she was sitting there by herself on some oak blocks and supported by steel jack stands.  She was stripped of her dignity, damaged and patiently waiting to be rescued.  When I put my hands on her hull sides, I was overwhelmed with joy.  It was like seeing an old friend after twenty-five years.  I just could not believe I was there to take the Integrity home.  Of course Terry also experienced some strong emotions as he too put his hands on her hull sides to say a heartfelt good-by to an old friend.

She now sits in my driveway waiting to be brought back to her original glory.  And yes, the little Sabb diesel from Utah that is responsible for this reunion did arrive and is awaiting its turn to be mounted on the same engine beds of the original scrapped engine.

Twenty-five years later an old friend has returned home ready to be freshened up and embark on its newest journey.

Phil - Fabulous story! Question - does she have tabernacle masts?

Hi Adam,

Thanks for your nice comment…

Yes, each mast has its own tabernacle.  The mizzen mast has a crotch bolted to the upper starboard side of the mast for the main mast to rest when going under a bridge near our home.  The tabernacles also make stepping the masts a two man operation.  No equipment needed.  It works well.  If you look at the Integrity on the boat lift, you can see the crotch on the mizzen mast.  The main mast only has a head stay because the mast is stepped on the keel.  Stays were needed for the mizzen mast because of the engine is located below and the mast had to be stepped on the cross bridge.  You can see the side stays in the command cockpit photo.

Hi Joe,

Thank you for your interest and comments.

I have a question...Have you ever replaced a centerboard in these boats?

I would like to replace the rusted steel centerboard in Integrity with a new stainless steel board.  Down below I can see the pivot pin location by the bulge in the glass layup.  My thinking is to cut this area out across the front of the trunk to get at the pin.  The pin is probably rusted in so I would have to use a sawzall to cut the pin ends off to drop the centerboard out the bottom.

Any thoughts or suggestions...??

Have a nice day,
Phil

There is a guy on the Catboat Forum that will make up and sell SS Herreshoff America centerboards - I believe these boards are the same for all the sailing models of this hull - though the plans are readily available and you could take them to any machine shop.

Thanks Adam...I e-mailed Jim for a quote.

We have two laser burning machines so I could have a centerboard cutout here and save shipping.  Let's see what his quote is.  I'll let you know...

Thanks again,
Phil

Thank you!  1976 Nowak & Williams Outboard Catboat....
Recently, My Father purchased a 18' 2" Nowak & Williams Catboat. I have seen the specs on The Catboat Assoc. website, but I can't really zoom in enough to tell how many horses they had pushing this boat originaly. If anyone can tell me what size motor they came with back in 76, I would be very appreciative.

Hull speed of Nowak & Williams Catboat
Hi there,
My husband and I sail a Tillosten/Pearson built 18' HA Catboat which is similar to what the Nowak & Williams built. The hull speed of the boat is 4.5. So when we researched putting a new motor on it we decided to go to a 6hp Tohatsu 4 cylinder which fits nicely into the well. The previous owners had a 9hp engine on it that was way to big for the boat and our thinking was that since the boat can't go above its max hull speed that a 6hp was sufficient.

Hope that helps.

Up for auction we have a 1974 Herreshoff 18 day sailor .

These are very popular and you will not find many coming available for sale as they seem to have a cult like following .

I would say she does need a little TLC and will describe what I mean below

Her hull is in good clean original shape , below the waterline there do not appear to be any blisters , above the waterline the hull sides have original gel coat and with a compound and wax will clean up and shine .The deck is solid underfoot with no visible soft spots  . The 2 cockpits both appear to be solid underfoot as well .

As you can see she has wheel steering as pictured , the rudder does need a little work , there are some signs of cracking on the top of the rudder blade which is a simple fix but I wanted to be sure to disclose it in the description .

The centerboard is in the back of my truck as the previous owner was getting ready to refinish it , it needs to be sanded and painted , she draws approx 1ft 9 inches board up and approx 4ft board down .

The sails are included and are in reasonable condition , not new but they certainly have a few more seasons of use left in them .

There are blue vinyl cushions as pictured , what you see pictured is what is included in the sale .

There is a well in the back cockpit area and can take an outboard up to about 8hp , there is not an outboard included

The 2 masts were professionally repainted and although now dirty they have been well done and will clean with some soap and water , they are both aluminum  and not wooden so will not rot .

These classics typically sell between $7,000 for a rough example up to $15,000 for a pristine boats  , another plus is that the trailer pictured is included .

The trailer appears to be in good shape , I towed it about 60 miles without incident , it tracks well . The types are in good condition and not dry rotted , it does have a solid axle no spring and as such I don't know if I would tow it across country ,

The boat comes with a clear Maryland title in hand , the trailer has a notarized Bill of Sale .

In short we have a boat that was in the process of being cleaned up unfortunately the previous owner fell on hard times and had to sell it , being a classic it is well worth the money , we have priced it at approx 60% of the price of a rough version , she has good bones and comes with a trailer included .If you are looking for a classic at an affordable price , the looks of a classic wooden boat without all the maintenance then she may be worth a look .

Please feel free to e-mail or call with any questions .

Thanks Matt 410 533 6946

Thank you

Hey Joe,
We spoke earlier about my 74 Herreshoff Scout.  I've attached a picture of it under shrinkwrap in the backyard and a pic of the brass plaque with the hull number on it.  I have to look through my old computer for some of my older pictures which are better.
Like I said, its a 1974, the number on the brass plaque is 005.  Has the original sails, white with 2 light green stripes, original rudder, blocks, lines, blue seat cushions, older model Johnson 6hp outboard.  I have a New Jersey title for it, no trailer though.  I'm located in Toms River, NJ.  I'll be putting it into the water in about 6 weeks once it warms up and I can get some work done to get it ready.  Please let me know what you think as far as price and how you think the best way to go about selling it is.  Thanks again for your help.

Shane Duke - owner of a Scout 18

Hey Joe, just wanted to let you know I'll be taking the cover off my boat and getting it ready to sell on Wed.  I just have to clean it up/oil the teak and some other things.  Getting a new water pump for the outboard and am going to put a fresh coat of clear on the hatch covers.  The cleanup should only take a day or so, the rest should be done by this weekend.  Should have some fresh pictures by then.  Sorry I didn't get you some other pics, didn't get a chance to have my friend look at my old hard drive.  I saw that you posted another Scout in FL.  Any idea what it went for ?

Hey Joe, here are some pictures of the boat.   I just got to get the cover off and do some cleanup work. I have some one who may be interested who I also sent these pictures.  I'm just not sure what I should ask for it.  Just trying to get a fair price.  Let me know what you think.  I will be at work all day so I wont be able to check my email so maybe I'll give you a call this afternoon.
It also has hatch covers for all the hatches made of wood that matches the teak pretty well when its oiled.  Original booms and sails.  The sails are white with a diagonal green stripe.  Blue sail covers and royal blue cushions (4 for the front and 2 for the back - one of the small ones for the back is missing.  It has a wooden tiller and all the blocks and everything.  There's a pic of the motor.  Like I said its an old Johnson 6hp and it has a 5 gallon gas tank.  I have to go to work in a few minutes if you need to get a hold of me you can call me at 908 910 9984.  Thanks.
Shane

Shane - from the pic's above and your description I'm going to value your Scout at around $5000 , if it had a trailer add another $750 to $1000 base on it conditon ....... Thats my 2 cent on what i think your Scout should sell for in this market !  Like I have stated before " Where are you going to find these 40 year old boats !

Herreshoff Scout Catboat
Length: 18'
Beam: 8'2"
Draft: 1'10", board up
SA: 200 sq ft
Year Built: 1974 by Nowak and Williams
Location: Chanhassen Minnesota
This is a centerboard, cat ketch, open cockpit daysailer.

It is a catboat with the same hull lines as the Herreshoff America.
It has two cockpits and is big enough to daysail a small army.
The sails are in good condition and it comes with cockpit cushions in good condition as well.
The motor well has a 24 volt trolling motor for getting in and out of a slip or mooring.
And the rear cockpit has destroyer wheel style steering.

The boat comes with a trailer in good condition and a spare tire for the trailer.
It has been an indoor cat for at least the last 2 1/2 years.
It is an awesome boat and could also serve as a low speed launch under gas or electric power. I am selling it because I am starting to realize that I should have bought a trailer boat instead.

Hey Joe, sorry I didn't get back to you earlier.  That other guy ended up backing out.  I've been so busy with work and school I haven't have much time to do anything new to the boat.  I ended up painting the hatch covers white so they match more what the boat originally came with.  Should have some time to take a few pictures this weekend.  I will let you know.  Thanks. I have just recently joined this forum after I discovered Herreschoff daysailer, the Scout 18.  I just love the design of this little daysailer.  It meets the requirements of what I am looking for in a daysailer to put on my lake and have available for the grandkids and family.  Eventhough this tread for this boat is somewhat aged, I felt that there is a possibility that it is still available or you might be able to connect me with someone who has one.  I am determine to own one of these crafts and hope that you will be able to help me in my efforts.

??????? The helmsman should have moved the tiller to the port
side to turn upwind. The boat would have stalled but wouldn't have
capsized. ???????

Thank you for the reply, I will get you some pictures once I get back to the computer that has them.  I have not been getting many replies, but I think it is a unique enough boat that I should expect that.  On the other hand, I have had some interest.  I  have the space to store it (indoors even) until someone decides to take it off my hands, and I have no immediate need to cash out on it.  I bought it from Doug McFall after he already turned it over to a broker to sell it for him.  I responded to his ad from the Cat Boat Association Cats4Sale page (which he posted before the broker had it).  Had he waited just a little bit longer, he would have saved paying the commission!  So I should take a lesson in patience from that!

Best Regards,

Scott

to me

Hi Joe...it has been a while since we last communicated.

I am well into the Integrity restoration project.  I'll post some pictures in a week or so to show how the project is coming.

I have a question that I hope you can help me with...Squadron Yachts used a copper drain fitting that they epoxied to rigid 1/2" and 3/4" tubing to drain various areas of the Scout.  I am replacing some of the drains with larger ones but would like to add a couple more like what was used.  Do you know where these can be purchased?  I cannot find them anywhere.

Thanks,

to me

Good Morning Joe…

Squadron Yachts used two sizes of these fittings in the Scout and they fit 5/8 and 3/4 rigid copper tubing.

They were used throughout the boat to drain the cockpit areas, corners in the seating area where water would collect and the lockers under the hatch covers.

In many situations, rigid copper would connect two or more of these fittings and a hose would connect them to a thru hull.

I checked out the King-Gage…nothing there.

Thanks for your interest,

Phil Lawrence

H-18 Catboat ......

Jim Cole <jcole@commandalkon.com>

to me

I Hi Joe,

I just purchased an H-18 locally and will pick up the boat next week.  Very thrilled with the boat.  Needs restored, will be my retirement project when I retire.  Information on the boat is not readily available, so thought you might be able to send me in the correct direction with your knowledge:

Is any one making spare parts for the boat.  Found 1 E-mail that said that someone had purchased the molds but did not provide the new owners name.  I did locate the OEM sail maker.

Do you have any idea who may have supplied the navigation lanterns as seen on the brochure  and also one of the boats in the pictures.  Would be a really nice addition to the boat.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Somewhere around 1976 the “America” was available in a special “Bicentennial” model. It had some extra fancy woodwork and real working oil navigation lights. Not sure if they were offered after this – but I’d bet the lanterns Mr. Cole speaks of in the catalog are these. I do not believe these are Coast Guard compliant as navigation lights any longer – so while they are neat to look at they are probably not functional - though you could electrify them easy enough. They were probably made by Den Haan's, Perko, or W&P or somesuch – probably can still find them if you search the web…

Here is a picture - Note lanterns:

Hi Joe. it's James Reid.  As you know I own the Herreshoff Scout "Freebird" pictured on the registry.  Hopefully you can help me.  I would like to get a bendable mast for both my main and mizen mast to replace the fixed ones I have.  Any suggestions?  Has this been done before?  Is it a major task?  I"ll have to do this or sell my boat.  Thanks for all your help and knowledge.  Did you ever sell your Harbor Pilot (the Red One)?

The folded mast - or Tabernacle Mast - can be done on HA's but not sure on the Scout. Marshall Marine offers to do it professionally for HA’s as it's an option on their Sanderling Catboat (the rig is pretty much interchangeable between both boats).  See:

http://www.marshallcat.com/html/tabernacle_mast1.html

I'd give them a call and see if they could do the mods.

PRICE REDUCED! 1976 Herreshoff America Bicentennial edition cat boat - $5500 (Shapleigh, ME)
was $ 7500.00....... :)

The price has been reduced for quick sale from $7,500 to $5,500. 1976 Herreshoff America Bicentennial edition classic cat boat! Designed by Halsey Herreshoff it is white, green, and red and has beautiful lines. This boat sails and handles great making it a good starting cruiser with good amenities as well. The boat was last moored in Sebago Lake, but is certainly sea worthy. 6'6" V berth sleeping accommodations for two. Five cabin ports (one opening) and self-draining cockpit. Simple boat to handle with low center of effort gaff-rigged sail plan and retractable keel. Yanmar YSMA Diesel 8hp inboard motor, currently without a battery. The engine did turn right over when recently hooked up. Needs some TLC. The boat has not been sailed recently but the engine had run strong and dependably and sailed great! Includes a single axle Venture boat trailer with bunks and a matching wooden row boat (dingy). Would love for this to go to a new loving owner who can give it the time and attention it deserves. Note: The pictures were taken on a rainy day.

 Year: 1976
 Length: 18'
 Beam: 8'
 Draft: 18'
 Material: Fiberglass
 Hull Type: Monohull
