Title: Engine for Scout 18'

I'm considering putting a 2010(ish) Yamaha 6HP outboard into the well of my Scout (hull #4).  The catch is, it's a 4 stroke, build in a 9.9 chassis (2 cylinder vs 1).  I've measured pretty well and I think it will fit. 

But, should I be concerned that it weighs in at ~80lbs?  Does anyone see reason for concern at hanging that weight off the well's mount...or any other concerns for that matter?

I don't think the weight is an issue - but the wells on these were notorious for creating breathing problems  for engines (at least for the 2 strokes). So an engine that fits that snug in there may be an issue. This was in the Catboat version so it might be different for the Scout. You could call Herreshoff Design's in Bristol RI - the original designer - and see what they think or suggest...

Good point Adam.  I seem to remember reading something about that problem for the America.  I'll take your advice and give Herreshoff designs a call.  Push comes to shove, I think I can vent the front panel in front of the engine. 

Any other words of wisdom?

Adam, I can't seem to crack the code to upload pictures (try as I might) so I included some Youtube links instead. 

The last video shows using a gin pole to raise the main mast.  The main and mizzen both have stainless steel tabernacles we built by modifying the original factory "Folding mast device" design.  Phil Lawrence (Integrity's owner) was a big help to me by drawing up specs for the original design as deployed on his Scout.

The only history I have on my boat goes back to Doug Mcfall owning it in Idaho.  It then moved to Minneapolis, finally coming to Maryland when I bought it last spring.

Does anyone out there know any history on hull #4 prior to Idaho?

Adam, I called Herreshoff designs and they didn't have too much to offer regarding the engine air flow.  Though they designed the basic hull for the 18 footers, they left the detail work to the builders (in this case, Nowak and Williams).  But it was great to talk with them none-the-less.  They themselves use an 18 ft launch.

I've decided that if I have engine breathing problems, I'll just install a vented face panel on the motor well.  We'll see.

I have completed installing 6 HP Yamaha 4 stroke into 18" Scout.  I had to do one or two modifications to strengthen the motor mount and to shoe horn the engine in.  Remoted the throttle and shift into a vintage Morse MT-2 control.

I'd love to post some pictures but as of yet have not cracked the code on how to do that.  I'm using a MAC and Firefox and the on line tools just don't seem to cooperate with them.

Any suggestions out there?
