Title: H 12 1/2 Winch - where did it go?

Hi,

Hoping you can help.  I have a small winch that came with my H 12 - I'm not sure where it goes if I were to put it back on.  Also - there obviously needs to be a small spring to hold the pawl - but I cant find an image of what one looks like so I can try to make one.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Bob - I've never seen a winch on a 12 - I don't believe it would be stock - I would guess someone added that aftermarket for some sort of convenience - Halyard, jib or main sheet...Personally I'd leave it off.

Thanks for the info - I've never seen it either.
I'll stop by the museum and see if they can identify it and at least give me an idea of what the spring looks like.
I may not install it - but I would like it operational.

I believe it would be the #16 Ratchet Bollard - from the catalog page I posted.

I think I have your answer for this one... My boat had two of these, and they were mounted on the forward bulkhead (see photo below showing the screws in the triangular pattern of the winch base protruding from the back side of the bulkhead beam next to the mast hole).  Presumably they were to tighten the main and jib halyards given their position, which is peculiar, because the jib certainly does not require a winch to tighten, and the issue with tightening the main is more of the line stretching than the amount of force you can apply by hand alone.  Besides, with the design of the pulley the way it is on the top of the mast, I wouldn't want to tighten it too much and split the mast up there.
