C. Raymond Hunt and W. Starling Burgess
December 9, 2016 – May 2017
New Bedford Whaling Museum
Exhibition Opening Reception
Friday, December 9
6 – 8 pm

This important exhibition celebrates two extraordinary innovators of American yacht design: C. Raymond Hunt and W. Starling Burgess. Hunt and Burgess created some of the most groundbreaking designs the industry has ever seen, from elegant J boats to record-breaking power yachts, and their influence continues to reverberate today. Highlights include: an early Boston Whaler; 1/3 scale Concordia model; a restored 110 series sailboat; and historic photographs by Norman Fortier, Albert Cook Church and Stanley Rosenfeld.

Saw it yesterday during the musuem's Moby Dick Marathon readings. Great exhibit, especially the display of Hunt drawings (copies, of course) which you can pull out of tubes, spread out on a drafting table and look over at your leisure. One quibble is that they omit mention of yacht designer Sonny Levi who was investigating vee bottoms with strakes contemporaneously with Hunt: https://www.powerboatracingworld.com/2016/11/13/sonny-levi-the-father-of-modern-powerboat-design-has-passed-away/

We went the week before - very nice. I also thought it was nice to be able to go through the drawings. Didn't see anything on Hickman's earlier cathedral designs as well - but i'd assume the purpose was to give a broad showing of two great designers collective works - and if you want more "buy the book's".... Which I highly recommend - both are well written and informative.

I also visited the museum a while back. Honestly, I was very pleasently surprised by the quality of the exhibits. Everything was well thought out and easy to follow too.
