Specific Herreshoff Vessels / Re: looks like we found 12 1/2 #1281

If you talk to them, tell them Dad sends along his best wishes.  He hasn't seen Robert since the day he stopped by the boathouse to see Dad's new boat "Target"... that would have been 50 years ago!

Coecles is a stretch for the 12s, because Nantucket would be difficult to sail to and expensive to ferry the boat out to.

Isn't that on Shelter Island, and not Nantucket?

I'd give the folks at Ballentine a call and ask them about her.  They're the current builders of this boat, and might give you some useful insight.  Ask for Amy or Tyler and I'm sure they'll tell you everything you need to know!

FINALLY!  Something nice to look at when arriving from Bridgeport on the ferry!

A good guess would be to check with George Darling at Darling's Boat Works in Charlotte, VT.  If it's wood and needed work on Lake Champlain, then he might have touched it.

While on Great South Bay, I'd check with the Bellport Yacht Club, although I don't recall seeing her there on any of my trips through...

Restoration / Re: Marconi 12 1/2 sail plan

I can only speak to the sail plan of "Minx" which is on the floor of the Museum.  She had a roach, three removable battens in pockets on the main, and I'm pretty sure two on the jib.  The sails were Ratsey & Lapthorne.

We also had a set of Egyptian Cotton sails stamped "Herreshoff", and to tell the truth, I can't remember if it had battens or not.  The sails should be somewhere around the museum I would think!

Miscellaneous Herreshoff Topics / Re: Use of bronze during war time
« on: April 11, 2013, 01:56:50 AM »
From what I understand, the materials regs for the war effort didn't kick in until late 1942.  Remember that Pearl Harbor didn't happen until December of '41, and it took some time for Congress to figure out what was needed.

A perfect example was that the Lionel toy train company still put out a catalog in 1942, but many plated parts were instead blackened to prevent corrosion.  By 1943 they were building ships binnacles and compasses for the navy.

By the end of '42 everybody was in the war effort, including Herreshoff.

Dad says Vie and Alex still have it, and are sailing her in their 90's.  They built it in their backyard from the plans in "Rudder".
