Herreshoff Sailing Vessel Classes / New York 40 news from the Med
« on: March 30, 2024, 07:29:52 PM »
Hi All, I know it has been a very long time but life is busy!
I just wanted to give you all an update from the Forties here in Europe. Sandra and I have terminated our 14 year long adventure with Chinook due to a difference of opinion on how to transform her into a winning boat. Chinook is at present one of the most original boats in the fleet and we did not wish to be connected with any changes to her. We are, however, extremely proud to have restored her to her former glory and she remains the most all consuming project that we have ever been involved with. She is now in new hands and we wish them well.
Some info for the data base.
Owners 2010-2012 Jonathan Greenwood, Sandra Ugolini, Tim Greenwood, Niall Dowling and Michael Boyd
Owner 2012-2015 Graham Walker
Owner 2015 to present Paolo Zannoni
Present rig is Gaff cutter
Restoration 2012-2013 Jonathan Greenwood, Sandra Ugolini, Guillaume Magnan, Andrew Bates among others!

There is very little news about Rowdy's transformation back to gaff cutter. She suffered a dismasting during the Imperia regatta in 2022 and has since been slowly working back towards the original gaff rig. Information is scarce but I believe she will be sailing by mid season. The mast and spars are being built by Ventis shipyard in Holland, the hardware by Absolute Projects in Portugal and the rigging by Amazing Rigging in Palma, Mallorca. Sails by North UK I believe.
Owner Howard Dyer 2012 to present

We would love to get our hands on Rugosa! Any ideas?

Herreshoffingly yours,

Jono.

Herreshoff Boats For Sale / Re: NY 40 in Hawaii

Such a shame to see the asking price for this yacht. It will only allow her to languish in obscurity for many more years. Glad I was able to save one and get her back on the race course where she belongs. Looks like Rugosa is going for around the same figure. When will people realise that old knackered wooden boats are not worth such ridiculous sums.

Definitely a 40 but what's with the bulwarks! Any idea on the proposed sail plan, Charles?

Hi Guys,

Rowdy has not yet sold but I hope to have more news for you in the next couple of weeks. It looks serious, though. If sold, destination looks like Newport.

Very interesting, Sisyphus. Will drop you a note on the email.
Also interesting that you say Marilee's configuration is not original-what is different?
Don't worry, Chinook will be the gaffer she was designed to be. Would dearly love to convert Rowdy too. That's a really big job. Any takers?
Looking forward to fleet racing the 40s. That will be a real spectacle1

Full steam ahead, Steve. Have a look at the blog here:

I was talking about John Hutchinson's video posted under Misc Herreshoff Topics in December. Brought a tear to my eye.

Thanks, Alerion Sailor. It's nice to have some feedback. Having seen recently the video of the demise of a Herreshoff in a local landfill, I feel good about saving one.

Thanks Adam, I think I have managed to secure them.
We have finally started work on Chinook and we now have a blog so you can all follow progress.

All comments welcome especially those constructive ones!

As we will be buying a lot of stuff in the US for the project, I am looking for someone in the New England area to help me acquire and store the various parts required for onward shipping. Does anyone know of an agent who could do this for us?

Much obliged,

Jono

Firstly, Happy New Year to all.

Steve, Thanks for passing on the info, though I haven't heard anything. Will let you know.

Could you and your members look out for a pair of Herreshoff bronze winches that came off  NY40 Chinook. I reckon they will appear for sale soon.

Much obliged.

Jono

Thanks for the info. I will try to contact the potential interested party and I'll let you know.

Shame about Mistral but it makes sense. No news of Typhoon either. I'll keep digging.

Hi All,

Sorry for not being very active recently but I have been visiting regularly. I just wanted to give you an update on Chinook. After a tough and frustrating 18 months of financial difficulties, we have finally secured the budget and will be starting the restoration early in the new year. She should be on the race course for the 2013 season here in the Med.

I have been following the posts about The Wizard. So cool that another has been found. I mailed Charles a while back for more info but got no reply. He suggested that she might be available and if so I may have an interested party.

Finally, I have been doing a bit of sleuthing myself but now need some help. I have a book compiled but never published by Chris Madsen who restored Rowdy. In it he mentions a certain yacht broker called Jurek Pilek who used to sail on Mistral and who last saw her sailing off to Europe under the new ownership of a German around 2002. Intrigued, I traced Jurek to California and tried to contact him without success. Perhaps one of you might have better luck.

Keep up the good work.

Rowdy may be on the market, but we will continue to race her and keep her in top condition.

Hi Adam,

It is not from Chinook as her original windlass is still bolted to the foredeck, however it is probably from one of those broken up or lost at sea. We should really buy it in case we stumble upon Typhoon or wizard of Bristol.
