rbgarr, good thought about Donn.  He has restored and maintained a number of them.

Also, the Long Island Maritime Museum folks may know a bit:  https://www.limaritime.org/

They have an active boat restoration club there, and I've seen a Smith boat.

Hi,

These pages are just lightly tracked.  Another good source for info is the 'Wooden Boat Forum' on Facebook.

Good luck!

History update: This past year was the Centennial of the "S" boat design in 1919.  I had a real treat when the daughter of the first owner of my boat found me through the registry and contacted me. She came down to Port Jefferson Long Island and sailed with me in our YC's 'Village Cup' charity regatta!  She had never been on her mom's boat, as it left the family long before she was born.  She brought with her most of her mom's memorabilia.  Her mom passed in 2007, but the family always fondly remembered the boat that her mom owned only for two years from 1936 to 1938 when the boat was sunk in the great hurricane of '38.  She brought pictures, an original watercolor, and her mom's trophy for winning the Narragansett bay S boat regatta in 1937!  Even some shavings from the boat while being built! But get this, her mom, Ann Wicks, was only 14 years old when her parents got her the boat!

The only pics of the boat are a couple of it being built at the Herreshoff yard, a deck shot, and a shot of her sunk against the shore.

See some pics here: http://lihubbards.com/1919pics.html

Great website!  The only Catboat designer I know of in that period is Gil Smith of Long Island.  He designed many for the Great South Bay on Long Island which is rather shallow.  No idea if it is his design, but he was known for those.

Good luck!

Wonderful find!  The family boat when I was young was a FI-23, hull 1222. Tigress.

A number of about 26' boats by Herreshoff.  Picture?  And is that 26' LWL or LOA ?

Join us "S" boat fans next year for a number of events surrounding the 100th anniversary of the class!

Let me know if you need contact info.  Events will be in the Western Sound around Larchmont, as well as in Narragansett bay.  With special things at the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol.

Plans are well under way!

A little boat history update:  I got a great letter from Fred Bieberbach, the marine surveyor who did my survey.  I ended up meeting him for the first time this winter.  He attended Warren Barker's talk the Herreshoff Museum this winter, and ran into some old family friends.  Turns out that their dad was 'Unk' Allen (Godfrey) who passed away in 2008.  But he realized it was 'Unk' who did the partial restoration on Clara J around 1970!  More pieces to the life of an "S" boat!

Restoration / Spin pole track?
« on: September 17, 2017, 06:58:23 PM »
Would anyone know where to find a mast track for a spin pole, for an "S" boat?

I have 'Clara J', hull 1385, restored by IYRS in 2014.  And I've got all the hardware I need to rig for a chute except the track and car for the pole.

Almost there!

Thanks,
Dave

Herreshoff Sailing Vessel Classes / S boat spinnaker

I am rigging my boat, 'Clara J', hull 1385, for spinnaker.  Does anyone know what the original "Spinnaker Boom Slide" length would have been?  I believe it was pattern 12141 and the drawing would have been 77-79 .  And its position on the mast?

Thanks,
Dave

Oh, not to mention that HMC was certainly not building 12 1/2s in 1981!

 :)

There seems to be some confusion with this boat.  It seems that #1376 was not actually built, and that the number and plate were given to another boat.

See: http://www.herreshoff.info/Menu/index.htm?/Docs/S01376_Not_built.htm]http://www.herreshoff.info/Menu/index.htm?/Docs/S01376_Not_built.htm]http://www.herreshoff.info/Menu/index.htm?/Docs/S01376_Not_built.htm

Maybe the Museum knows more.  It's often the case that a lot more info is floating out there than can be found in the web sites.

Also, my own boat was built in '36, even though it has a later number.  And this boat shows a 1938 date.  Not totally uncommon, but if two years out of sync it raises questions about the original.  This might be a replica plate too.  Hard to tell.  Maybe the current owner knows the last few owners and names.  'Minx' was also not an uncommon name.

The database entry on this site shows some interesting details too.  Previous owners and such.
