Nice, indeed. But might the builder's plate mounted on a plaque suggest that the boat itself is gone?

This 12 1/2 was contracted for on August 5, 1935 for delivery on the next day to Edward Carroll Stollenwerck who lived from 1914-1996.

HH makes a great point.

What else may be determined from the ad, which is reprinted here:

herreshoff 12 1/2 hull # 1281 - $10000 (brunawick me)

90% restored needs sum one to finish all original hardware and hull # plaque on trailer great project for the price tex for more info

From the punctuation, or lack of it, one suspects all the original hardware is there, there is a trailer, and it needs work.  Maybe not, maybe that's what it needs and all there was left was the builder's plate.  I'd also suggest it's a young person ("sum" for some).   Perhaps a great grandson of the original owner.

No further information based on your contact Adam?  No further pictures than the mounted plate?

OK - Here we go.

Spoke to the current owner Scott Gregory - son of Robert Gregory who is already listed as one of the original owners (1950) in the database. Very nice guy... It has been in the family since - they they have owned her for 60+ years. The boat fell into a bit of despair from lack of use but Scott rebuilt most of her in the past 15 years. She's had most of her ribs, and transom, replaced - as well as fully refastened. They were able to save much of the original planking and combing. She still needs to be re-caulked and replace the floorboards (and I would expect cosmetic work) - but its all there - all the hard stuff is complete. She includes all the original hardware as well. Scott no longer has time to finish the project so the family would like to find a new caretaker. They are asking what I believe is a pretty low price for what you get - 10K - located Brunswick, ME. Some interesting facts:

1. The Gregory's have owned her since the early 1950's (Scott himself for about 15)
2. His Dad is still alive (Essex, CT) - supposedly has many great stories sailing and racing her on Great South Bay (Jon...ahem) and in LI sound
3. They originally sailed her out of Bayshore, NY (Jon - ask your dad if he knows her?)
4. Then up on LI Sound - I assume CT.
5. Finally moved her to ME
6. He will take some pics for us when he gets a chance.

and yes I forgot to ask what her name is!!

If you talk to them, tell them Dad sends along his best wishes.  He hasn't seen Robert since the day he stopped by the boathouse to see Dad's new boat "Target"... that would have been 50 years ago!
