Artisan Boatworks 12-1/2
« on: July 17, 2008, 01:47:47 PM »
Artisan Boatworks is selling a stunning authentic reproduction of a 12-1/2.  You probably saw it if you were at the Wooden Boat Show in Mystic a few weeks back.  It was done with an eye toward historical authenticity ... they even went so far as the follow the Herreshoff tradition of the craftsmen signing the underside of the deck.  You can see it at:

If anyone was interested in this, you'll need to commission a new one.  I just heard that Alec sold it two weeks ago.

I believe it was FROG and sold to my neighbor down the street, Ed Riley. http://www.rileymarinemodels.com/

He loves it and Alec trailers her back to his shop each winter and she comes back looking fresh as a newborn each summer.

Alec is in the finishing touches of another one, as well.

Also, though this is the wrong thread to post it, he just got a commission to build a BB 18.  There were only a hnadful of these built and all are unaccounted for.  I can't wait to see it.

I'm pretty sure Alec 'pushed' the idea of building a BB 18.  It will be something to see!! http://www.artisanboatworks.com/classic-designs/sailboats/buzzards-bay-18

470+ sq. ft. of sail on a 29 footer!

It's not the sail area thats impressive to me - my 29' had 490 - but the displacement - its only 4400 lbs - less then half of my Bluechip! With that said numers can be misleading - my 22' Marshall is one of just a few built with 440 sq' and displaces around 5K - somehow I think the BB18 is a bit faster  ;)

I believe the published displacement on a number of HMCo boats was generous.  Wonder about Artisan Boatworks?

Alec is a stickler for detail.  My guess is that one of his will have a displacement very close to the original.
