Theories are nice base on some data.  But , this is what we do know :

18' Herreshoff Harbor Pilot is Hull #2
•Year: 1974
•Last Listed Price: US$ 14,900 (09/09)
•Sold: US$ 12,000 (04/10)
•Located in E. Dennis, MA

So, if hull #2 was built in 1974 by Nowak & Williams and i have not been able to locate any earlier years of the Pilot , it could be true , that the Nowak & Williams Yard only built these Pilots for one year 1974 !

We also now know that this HULL was built in 1970 for the Herreshoff   America model and 1974 for the Pilot Series.....

The model is no. 1707.

You can find in the Herreshoff Marine Museum, in the workshop, at the
center of the east wall.

It's about 13.6" long.

The text on the back of the model reads:

"Herreshoff America July 19, 1970
18 ft Cat Boat
for Nowak & Williams Model by A. S. deWH.
Scale 3/4" = 1' "

FUEL TANK installation and Battery management

Also, it appears that my Pilot is the only one that I have seen with the original steel (18 gal.) fuel tank !  Reason being is that over the years, they all rot out on the bottom of the tank and need to be replaced. My tank included, which developed tiny pin holes and I had them repaired so, I could stay original !
NOTE > that all of the Replaced fuel tanks in other pilots , either had to cut out a piece of the fiberglass trim to reinstall the hose clamps or cut out the fuel fill neck in the gunnels , to gain access to the top hose clamp fitting . The original fuel tank was installed before the top deck & side moldings were installed, leaving no direct access to the upper hose clamp. Removing the original tank was easy, by just cutting the fuel hose and removing the wooden floor trim that keep it in place.    I had to invent a custom tool to be able to reinstall my original fuel tank back into my pilot ……. Take note on my Pilot that no piece of added teak trim was used to cover up the cut out section of the deck or side molded fiberglass trim …. I will show pic’s of other fuel tank installations on other Pilots.  Note other owners had two choices either cut out a section of the deck/side trim or put in a smaller size fuel tank (12 to 15 gallons).  There is another option of moving the fuel tank from its present location to another location ….. I was thinking about cutting out dual hatches on the port & starboard side of the cat bench seating and installing two 12 gal’s fuel tanks under the mold seating.  This option would have worked just fine and even increased my travel range with the extra 6 gal’s of fuel, but I decided to stay original…… That is until I added the Bronze Port Hole to the cabin bulkhead wall. So I could see through the cabin when sitting on the custom teak cabinet seat that house my two batteries and a 30 amp plug in adaptor & volt meter gauge unit ….  Note > being that the Pilot is NOT a self bailing boat and needs to work off of the batteries for the bilge pump , I had a 110 electrical outlet install so, that a 2amp battery charger unit could keep the batteries fully charged during rain storms , etc ,etc ….  I would think if you were on a mooring ball, a solar panel unit connected to the batteries would also work fine, if it didn’t rain for 40 days & 40 nights????? …… Hum….????? Thoughts …..   My next topic will be the Location for the batteries on a Pilot !

I have found many of earlier deleted pictures of work in progess on my Herreshoff Harbor Pilot hull #63 - pages 9 thru 15 on this forum . I have started re-posting them back up on this forum ..... many are of the Farrow Soda Blasting System , I used on the hull of my Pilot , along with the removal of my Westerbeke Diesel Engine , rewiring the Pilot , etc,etc .....

Note the around plastic pie plate on the molding trim above the fuel tank , this was inserted to gain access to the hose clamp on the fuel line .

Note on " LOLA " there is a piece of teak trim above the fuel tank . again to gain access to the hose clamp , the trim molding was cut out and this teak trim is to cover up ....

This Pilot has Dual Fuel Tanks on each side , this was an Option at the Factory or the owner installed the other fuel tank for longer range between fill-up .

These Pilot's installed New smaller tanks between 12 to 15 gal's instead of the orginal 18 gal's tank . With a smaller fuel tank , there is NO need to notch out an opening in the side molding , because everything is accessible .

Original 18 gallon Fuel Tank on a Pilot ....

Oversize Fuel tank replacement on this Pilot with a 47 hp BMW Engine.

The boat is a 1974 with a 25 Westerbeke.  I don't have the paperwork yet.  So I don't know the VIN or hull number and these are the the only photos I have right now.  I'll post more info once I get the boat to South Carolina.

Thanks Jack ..... If you can obtain a picture of the Westerbeke engine , i can tell you ,if indeed you really have a 25 hp ! I to thought my Pilot had a 25 hp motor , but at the Atlantic City Boat Show a few years back, i ran into the Westerbeke Factory Rep. and he ask me to send him a picture of my Westerbeke motor , because some of the Pilot edtion's had an optional upgrade motor, which was either the 25 hp or the 30 hp.  The so called " Bullet Proof Westerbeke 30 hp diesel ", was made for the British Taxi Cab fleet in England and some of them are still in use today with thousands & thousands of hours on them .
The Herreshoff Harbor Launch model came standard with the Westerbeke 30 hp and the Fisherman model plus the Harbor Pilot model came with a standard Westerbeke 15 hp motor . The Westerbeke 25 hp would have been an upgraded option back in 1974 .

Well, it was a very short season for my Pilot , she was only used for two weeks in late Aug. then i went on vacation in Maine and never put her back in Sept. ...... I had made a earlier decision not to launch her after all that restoration work had been done , because she was for sale. I will not make that same stupid decision again next season if she is still not sold !  She is now stored again inside for another Winter season .
