Thanks Joe.  I enjoyed the read and look forward to duplicating the slow cruising pleasure the Jones have experienced.

Me Too...... heads really do turn has my Pilot cruise by @ 6 to 8 kts , one slight problem in taking the Pilot to dinner , once you pull up to a pier to dock , it takes about 30 mins to get off the pilot...... because of the people walking down to ask questions about that little eye turner of a vessel .....  When I'm asked about the Pilot my end statement is " Life is Good in owning a Herreshoff Harbor Pilot " ...... if you have the time to enjoy her with endless hours of Therapy  .......... ;D  ;D ;)

I posted this before , but i just came across it again .......

North Cove Yacht Club

In 2001 the Club sold the existing launch and replaced it with a Herreshoff Pilot 18 ft. launch.

Gelcoat is better ….. more expense to gelcoat my pilot.... it was just under $4000.00

Awgrip is a premium paint job with a hard finish….. to paint a Pilot it’s between $1200.00 to $1500.00… if you hit / rub up against a fuel dock or piling and damage the Awgrip; you have to paint the whole side of the boat.
There is AWGRIP 2000 paint that allows you to spot paint the damage, but its not has good of a gloss paint job as regular Awgrip.

If replacing a motor which is best, for your kind of boating ?

The One Big Diesel Advantage...... If one is willing to travel at slower speeds, the one great advantage that diesel holds over its gas counterpart is lower fuel consumption, lower fuel cost ? and greater range. If fuel range is a consideration, then diesel wins hands down.

Of course this is entirely dependent on how fast you want to travel; if you want to run at the same speeds as gas power is capable of, then even that advantage fades
By now you should begin to understand why small, light weight diesels are not necessarily a better choice for small boats. That is, of course, unless you just "want" diesels, which a lot of people do, but not necessarily for rational reasons. The argument for gas engines is that they're cheap, efficient, and far less costly to maintain. And they are certainly just as reliable as diesels, all things considered.

The problems that ethanol in fuel are creating for gasoline engines (both inboard and outboard), fuel lines, filters, tanks, carbs, etc. are introducing uncertainty about how dependable they will be over a season.  Unless the fuel is consumed by the engine pretty rapidly, as it would be in commercial duty, things can get ugly and expensive in surprising and frustrating ways.

i will state that if , I had a choice of a new diesel engine vs a rebuilt older diesel, I'll go with the older heavy duty iron cast motor than the newer light weight motors for sale today!  Same with the older Starters and Generator/Alternator unit because of the copper wiring and the weight of the older units ....
