Tom Van Duyne is surrounded by lifeguard boats in his family's boatyard that are in need of repair. Van Duyne builds surfboats for most all ocean lifeguards in South Jersey

The second owner of this 1974 Herreshoff Harbor Pilot - Hull # 41 was " Harrah's Marina hotel/casino."...... And Quess what she operated as under Harrah's ?

1978
The board of directors of Holiday Inns, Inc. of Memphis, Tennessee, approves proposal to build and operate a hotel/casino in the marina area of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

February 1980
Holiday Inns, Inc. acquires Harrah's hotel casino company. Holiday Inn at the time has 1,600 hotels and interests in two casinos: a casino under construction in the marina district in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and a 40 percent ownership interest in River Boat Casino, Inc., a casino adjacent to the Holiday Inn hotel on the Las Vegas strip.

November 1980
The under construction marina casino in Atlantic City opens as Harrah's Marina hotel/casino.

My Herreshoff 18' came from  M&W Boatworks in AC, NJ. She previously worked as a water taxi for Harrah's Casino, ferrying tourists between Gardiner's Basin, Trump Marina & Harrah's in the AC inlet, early 1980's.
Her previous owner was Charles Jury, a boatbuilder who lived on a houseboat in AC inlet.
The boat is named "My Buddy" in memory of my dad, John VanDuyne, builder, inventor, VanDuyne Lifeguard Boat, who passed away in April 1997. I saw the boat in Soundings Mag., she had all the qualities my dad taught me were important in a workboat, straight stem, round stern, deisel engine, big rudder.
It just made me think of him so much.
I have all original parts, the sail says water taxi. I took the mast off to go under the Dorset Ave. bridge at high tide.
She's a great flounder fishing boat! All good.

Restoring the Shine to Fiberglass

By Don Casey

Revised by BoatUS editors in April 2012

The outer surface of a fiberglass boat is normally a special resin called gelcoat. Gelcoat has little structural value--the underlying laminates of resin-saturated glass fabric provide that--but gelcoat protects the hull and gives it its color and shine.

When the gelcoat was originally sprayed into the hull mold, it--like all gels--took on the shape and texture of the mold surface. The ultra high gloss most new boats exhibit is due entirely to the highly polished, mirror-like surface of the mold used in the original construction of the boat.

Time and exposure eventually erode the relatively soft surface of gelcoat, leaving it dull and chalky. Fortunately, the gloss usually can be restored.
---- MAYBE ??????

Cleaning

The first step in restoring the gloss to dull gelcoat is always a thorough cleaning. Add a cup of detergent to a gallon of water--warm water is better--and use a sponge to wash the surface with this solution. Be sure to protect your hands with rubber gloves.

If mildew is present, add a cup of household bleach to your cleaning solution. Difficult stains like fish blood and waterline scum may require the direct application of a concentrated cleaner formulated for fiberglass. Rinse the clean surface thoroughly and let it dry

Cardinal Joe! Here are the pics I took of my America 18' before and after I converted her from sailboat to power launch. I forgot to show you these pics a couple of years ago when I did this work.

She was beat up for years and left out to rot. I removed the cabin top, bulkheads, centerboard trunk and cockpit seats. I also dropped the cockpit sole down to the cabin sole height. I left the interior liner with the forward benches and the table starboard. I then framed out the boat floors and forward benches to raise the seating in the bow for leg room.

I used Trexx decking for the flooring and seating because I was prototyping the layout  I had to add weight to make up for the material I removed.

The boat has been powered up until now with a small outboard in the well.

These are all pics Pre- Sandy.  Lola sank in the huricane and was torn apart by good samaritans after the storm. The next time I post it will be this project all over again-this time as a deisel powered Bay fisherman done properly as I have seen in the pics on this site. Thanks for getting all those shots together and I'll keep everyone updated as I go along. You can contact me at Keytimekev@gmail.com if you have specific questions or comments about the old conversion or the new rebuild. Further contact info is available at www.barnegatbayboatrepair.com

Lola is the only fiberglass boat out of the 6 I own, but it has all the qualities I look for in a proper boat.

Now I can't find a way to post the pics I've uploaded to flickr and I have to get to the shop so I'll get back on this tonight. I still have to download the post hurricane ducktaping and re-launching photos and get the video of the rescue fiasco to youtube.

BTW the boat survived the hurricane but couldn't take the 6 hour effort to get her raised by some misguided people at the Toms River Yacht Club.
