to me

Joe,

I saw on the web site a photo of a Harbor Pilot with the fuel tank mounted under the seat in the stern.

Do you have any other information about this installation?

Thanks,

Steve

In a moderate sea, and very led lighting winds, under power, the main is kept 'midships and the downhaul tight.  With some wind, motor sailing, the traveler might be moved slightly outward.  These are very heavily-built cruising sails, so potential damage is minimal to non existent.

You have right.. These sails are nicely built and even I own one of the sailing boats.. Will share pics next time

I'm on vacation again > started trip to Stowe , VT  boated 3 days on Lake Champlain , lots of beautiful home on both the New York side & the Vermont side , all the Marinas are full with transit Canadian vessels coming down from Canada.
Lots of old time history on this lake going back to " Benedict Arnold " fighting the British Warships !  I saw the small Island that Benedict and his small fleet of ships hid behind > can't remember the name began with a V ..... ?  Anyway No  Herreshoff's on the water ?????

Well , back on vacation again , heading to Key West for the month of Feb. with my buddy Dave and "!The Pug Tug " ( was my Pilot that I Sold to Dave ) . Departed from Tuckerton , New Jersey trailer the Pilot 775 miles before the trailer , blew a bearing & hub , tried to ride on three wheels and another bearing & hub when , called a flatbed Tow Truck in the town of Santee , SC . Had the Herreshoff Harbor Pilot towed to this town which remind me of Mayberry RFD on TV .  Found a mechanic shop to put on 4 bearings & 4 new Hubs, I was on the road again after $1000.00 bucks in repairs  . An about a mile road blew a tire out , here riding on three wheels caused the one front axle to bend up  to rub against the wheelwell and blowout ,no one at the repair shop notice that the wheel was not align properly with the other three wheels ?
The pub tug and the trailer are now being flatbed to Charleston ,South Carolina to purchase a new trailer  $2875.00 !  Well Dave and I are in Key West waiting for the pug tug to be flatbed from the Hicktown of Mayberry RFD to Charleston It will take a couple days to outfit the trailer and then have it delivered to the keys , I still have to get a price on transport but it's 15 hours one way and I'm not doing it ! As this thread seems to be the main discussion point for the Harbor Pilots, I thought I would take a moment to introduce mine.  I have a red ?1978 Harbor Pilot which has lived its life within a ten mile radius of its birthplace in Bristol RI.  Based on the hull ID and builder's plate, it appears to have been built by Tillotson Pearson (hull) and finished at Squadron Yachts in Bristol RI.  Not far from Halsey Herreshoff's office and home.

I am the fourth owner.  It was originally (I am told) used by the harbor master in Newport.  The next owner repowered with a Yanmar 3GM30F (now with almost 500hrs) and replaced and moved the fuel tank.  The third owner was a neighbor who used it a few years and then upgraded to a small lobster yacht.  I acquired the boat after selling a 36ft sailboat and intended to use it to cruise around Narragansett Bay.  I did exactly that for a couple of years then got the hankering for a sailboat again and therefore this fine vessel has been on the hard under a tarp behind my barn for the past six or seven years.

The Pilot is a very stout little ship and has zero problems with the afternoon chop in a 20 knot breeze.  It is cat boat beamy so very stable as well.  Not sure how much difference the riding sail makes to stability but it sure looks salty when rigged.  My cruising is done mostly at six knots or so.  I know the engine is about twice the horsepower of the original powerplant (actually the same motor as on my former 36ft sailboat) but this is a displacement vessel so it really doesn't make much sense to try to push the boat at much more than six knots which it does easily at about 1500rpm in flat water as I recall.

I've pondered selling it for the past few years as I just haven't the time for two boats but have also just acquired a second mooring in a very convenient spot so will try to get it launched and see if it gets used more than before.  I've started to recommission the boat starting with a thorough cleaning of the fuel tank and replacement of all filters, fluids, belts, coolant hoses, batteries, water pump impeller, zincs and lubricating or replacing engine control cables.  Then comes a new bilge pump.  I anticipate giving her a fresh coat of red interlux after attending to accumulated minor dings.  The old depth meter doesn't work and is no longer made.  Might replace it but a depth meter here in RI with mostly sandy bottoms and an 18" draft is not critical so that task may be postponed.  Other than cleaning up the cabin I doubt I will have time this year to fancy up the woodwork and I am not one who really likes to fuss over perfect varnish anyways so I'll leave the weathered teak alone.  I only use the trailer to move the boat a mile to the launch pad but that also needs a bit of TLC and new brakes.  Projects, projects, projects....

I'll try to link some photos in Flickr.

Custom Herreshoff Harbor Pilot

This is the pilot bought years ago! Where did you find these old photos. Still trying to learn about the factory design custom job. It was a factory job. No question. Engine compartment was modified for gas engine, but everything else looks original build.
Kirk.

“Integrity” is for Sale ...... :)

Hi Cardinal Joe,

I’m the guy that posted the “Integrity” story with the registry, November 16, 2011.  I had several communications with you where you helped me with my posting.

The “Integrity” story was about finding her after 25 years and bringing her back home to Michigan for a restoration project when I retired.

Well today, eight years after she was found, she is finished and now I am selling her once again to buy a larger sailboat.  She has never been launched and proudly awaits her next owner.

I have attached a complete story of her for your viewing.  Could I ask you for some guidance in finding her a new home?  Because of the museum restoration and her purchase price, it will take that special person who wants something different, a one-of-a-kind vessel, a signature boat of the harbor.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you…

Is it possible to post this story on the registry in a PDF format so all the pictures stay in place?
