CHINOOK is in the water

at Newport Shipyard.  Spars are on deck.

We docked there yesterday to clear customs and the unmistakable bow profile / sprit caught my eye.

Has she sold?

Well she's no longer for sale on YW, but I notice ELENA is listed as "SALE PENDING".... Know who bought her?

CHINOOK / PAULINE was taken off Yacht World a few months ago.  She was being sold by someone as a favor for the owners, who were extremely anxious to sell her.  She has had a few modifications, though she does have much of her original hardware.  She has a number of broken frames and will need some attention for sure.  She was in the water in Mystic last year until about the end of November, and was then hauled there.

If she is now in Newport, it very well may be that she has sold.  I will try and find out if that is the case.

CHINOOK was sold in March to a syndicate in Ireland.  She is now in Europe and will be returned to her former glory.  The new owners intend on racing her in the classic circuit in the Med upon completion of the restoration.

It seems that some of the original hardware was not included with the sale.  The new owners would like to have it, and expect that the prior owner will be trying to sell it as antiques, "authentic Herreshoff", etc.  He asks that if any of us spot such items for sale (eBay, Craig's List) etc., we let him know.  So please, raise your hand if you see something ... it would be a shame not to re-unite hardware and boat.

Here is his note:

Hi Steve,

Just a small update on things happening with Chinook. She was purchased in March by a group of Irish sailors, myself included, with a view to totally restoring her to her former glory. I will be project managing the rebuild. She has now been shipped to Europe and work will be starting soon. The previous owner, a Mr Robert Rosenbaum, has retained various original items, including two of her deck winches, which I expect he will try to sell on as antiques or whatever. I would like to ask your forum members to keep an eye out for objects from a New York 40 appearing for sale over the next year as it would be a shame for Chinook to be separated from her original equipment. I know you have a couple of eagle-eyed members so I would much appreciate a nod in my direction if suchlike items appear for sale in the future.

You might also be pleased to learn that Rowdy has just completed regattas in Ajaccio, Corsica and Antibes, France winning both with ease. We are now off to Marseille and then Malta for more racing and believe me, Rowdy loves it !!

We are dedicated to preserving the remaining yachts of this class and I am actively searching for a buyer for Marilee so that she may be re-united with her sisters, Rowdy and Chinook on the race course where they belong.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Best regards,

Jono.

P.S. I am happy for you to post this mail on your forum if you so wish and I will give you updates when possible.

Hi Adam,

It is not from Chinook as her original windlass is still bolted to the foredeck, however it is probably from one of those broken up or lost at sea. We should really buy it in case we stumble upon Typhoon or wizard of Bristol.

Hi Jon - That is good news! Yeah we've discussed where Typhoon and Wizard of Bristol might be now... More mysterys to uncover...

Is there a list of specific items that are trying to be recovered besides the winches? It's great that you guy's are going to give Chinook the "Rowdy" treatment!!
