Doughdish Owners Here?
« on: November 28, 2010, 12:07:43 AM »
So... are there any Doughdish owners on this forum?  I'd love to hear about sailmaker preferences and hardware suppliers.  Both Bristol Bronze and J.M. REINECK & SON have web sites, but with precious few pictures of installed hardware.  Have any of you done hardware upgrades?

Wendy Goodwin and the folks at Cape Cod shipbuilding have a lot of the original HMC casting molds for the 12 1/2.

I just purchased a set of gudgeons and pintels for my 12 1/2 from them and they are the same size as my old worn out ones, meaning they were not re-castings.  The quality was very good in that they fit together well with no slop.
Some other vendors (I won't mention names, are re-casting parts from the original 12 1/2s, which end up being smaller due to the shrinkage.

You must specify that they are for an original wooden boat, or they might give you what they redesigned for the bulleyes

Yes.  When we had "Minx" and had to replace her rudder (the original snapped off in a blow just below the cheek-blocks) E.L. supplied us with exact replacement for the hardware.

I understand what you're saying about "shrinkage".  You see this happen all the time with Chinese repros of American items wherein they make a mold from an original piece.  But some of the stuff out there looks really nice.  I'm specifically looking at replacing the traveler and block and the jib sheet deck hardware with some of the newer bronze stuff.

I would second Adam's vote.  Jim Reineck's work is fantastic.  The Delrin ball bearings make the blocks work very smoothly.  The finish work is finest kind.  I have discussed the work with Jim on several occasions, and I know he uses the original drawings to make his moulds.  The only downside is that the best costs a little bit more.
