Newport for the AC?
« on: December 29, 2010, 05:23:16 PM »
OK, I've seen a lot of chatter - even in the major papers lately - that "they" are leaning towards Newport for the next America's cup...Never thought that would happen. Now how cool would that be? Maybe I have to rent that Newport house again - or crash on Langerman's couch  8)....

Wonder if i can still get into my "Liberty" tee shirt....hmmmm, no.....

From today, don't know what it means, but we should have an answer by Friday:

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The head of the state Economic Development Corporation said that Rhode Island will not meet Friday's deadline for an announcement of the host city for the next America's Cup final race.

But EDC Executive Director Keith Stokes said representatives of BMW Oracle, the outfit that is running the races, told him Rhode Island would still be in the running despite missing the deadline.

Stokes said it's possible that BMC Oracle could announce multiple sites, pending successful negotiation of a host city agreement.

Stokes spoke at a press conference to announce the findings of an economic impact study that says hosting the final race would generate $1.1 billion in economic activity.

Oh well.... :'(

Dec 31 (5:50 pm PT): Golden Gate YC and race organizers reached a deal with city officials late Friday to hold yachting's most famous and historic regatta in San Francisco in 2013.

As for Newport's prospects: "Rhode Island has made a super-human effort with very little time and late in the game here," said Thomas Ehman, head of Oracle Racing external affairs and a member of the Golden Gate Yacht Club America’s Cup committee. "It's not only very much appreciated, but was an extraordinary effort. … Unfortunately for Rhode Island, we've run out of time and San Francisco's bid has been accepted tonight." Despite not being selected, Newport may head the list to host preliminary regattas.
