Hull #608 Ragusa formerly Sally. The boat I grew up on....
« on: June 18, 2011, 04:17:07 PM »
It's funny how life works, for some reason this morning I Googled Herreschoff, found the Herreschoff registry, and found the boat I grew up on. I haven't seen Sally since probably 1968, but the 1903 date of the hull and that distinctive stern make me certain that she is hull #608.
As a small child in Milwaukee I remember my father selling Trim, a US1 and buying Sally. We raced and cruised her on Lake Michigan from the time I was 4 until we moved to New Orleans in 1959. Sally was trucked to Lake Pontchartrain after the Queens Cup in 1959 where we cruised and raced her on the lake and Mississippi Gulf Coast until 1963. She was sold in 1963 to an owner in Houston.
At that time Sally was a cutter rig. If my memory serves me correctly her bow sprit had been added in the early 1950's to make her more competitive under the CCA rules. In '67 or '68 I delivered a Cal 2-30 to Galveston for a race and found Sally, bowsprit removed and re-rigged as a sloop. She belonged to a professor who was about to set off on a round the world cruise. Looks like he made it as far as San Diego. I have pictures and a magazine article about the boat if the owner would care to contact me. I have tried to insert a picture, but if doesn't seem to work.

Thanks for this, Sean.  If you email the photos (and article if you can), I will post them.  She is a special boat.

Sean:  By any chance, do you know anything of the Herreshoff yacht SABRE, sailing out of Sheboygan in the 1950s?

I remember the name, but there have been many boats named Sabre.

We cruised Sheboygan and Door County pretty much every year for about 5 years.

She wasn't a "Q" boat was she?

If anyone decides to rebuild Sally, I've got some shots of my father and his partner "Bad Weather" Bathke standing on deck that show some details of her deckhouse in the 50's. All that mess at the back of the cockpit and the box on the bow are butcher work someone added.

Sean:  The SABRE I am referring to was an M boat.

I sent an email to the gentleman representing the sale of SALLY.  If I get in touch with him, I'll be sure to let him know about the information you have.  If your pictures are digital (or can be digitized), I would love to have a copy of them as well.

In the meantime, if you could have a look at the provenance in the Registry page, http://www.herreshoffregistry.org/detail.php?hull=608, and let me know if I mis-interpreted anything, I would be much obliged.

Steve,

The following is from the rep, Dean:

"By the way she was sold to Mr. Mc Nulty by a Mr. M.W Hodgdon of Chicago IL.(1936-1941) who was the first owner to bring her from the coast at which time she was renamed "Sally"(1936)."

In 1954 Jerry Hickey and Herb Bathke bought Sally in partnership in Milwaukee from the estate of Peter McNulty. In 1959, Jerry bought Herb out and the boat moved to New Orleans with us.

I'll do the best I can to scan the photos. they are too large for my scanner to get the full shot. I'll see if I can scare up an 11 x 17 scanner.
