"pRUDENCE#71" l. fRANCIS
« on: December 01, 2011, 05:35:53 AM »
I am a new owner of a Prudence 23 hull and I am in the process of fitting her out. I don't see any Prudence categories in the registry and general web information is sparse. Is this a rare vessel or am I looking in the wrong place to connect with other owners?

Thank you: Dr. Pendragon

Welcome Doc - The Herreshoff Registry mostly deals with documenting and discussing the yachts that were built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company (HMCo.)- and are primarily designs of Nathanael Greene Herreshoff (NGH). The Prudence was designed by his Son - Lewis Francis Herreshoff - and was never built by HMCo. It was designed in 1937 (his design #71) and was published in the old Rudder Magazine as an open design - so there have been many builders over the decades since.

With that said, this forum is open to discuss just about any Herreshoff designed craft of any generation (there are at least 4 generations of Herreshoff designers) - as well as just about any other craft that tickles your fancy - so this forum is as good a place as any to ask questions!

An excellent source for info on the Prudence is LFH's book Sensible Cruising Designs (Pub. 1973) where she is prominently featured.

Might you be able to suggest a place where there might be a Prudence group?

I don't think there's a group devoted specifically to Prudencia (;>) but you might ask on Woodenboat Magazine's Forum whether there are current or former owners who you could share thoughts with: http://forum.woodenboat.com/

Another source is The Rockland Apprenticeshop, which restored one a few years ago: http://www.apprenticeshop.org/

Good luck!
