Need HELP answering this Question.....
« on: May 16, 2012, 04:52:59 AM »
Hi there--

I work in the WoodenBoat Publications' library and have a question re: a Fletcher Marine Products' 12' fiberglass sailboat. A reader has bought one and wishes to know more about it, the company, and how to complete rigging the boat. He describes it as 12' long, 5-6' beam, dish-like hull, daggerboard.  Do you know where I might find more info about this boat? Thanks for any leads, Pat Lown pat.lown@woodenboat.com

Well there are a number of "Fletcher" boat builders from the UK to WA state, to Florida, etc.... Pics might help...

Fletcher Marine Products was a boat building company in Westmont, NJ. They built 16' wooden Comet class sailboats. I owned a 1946 Comet #2357, an 8 stay model, when I was in high school, and raced at the Narrasketuck YC on Long Island. The boat was originally in Tom's River, NJ. Not sure, but I believe it was a Fletcher. I don't know if the company still exists but I suspect not.

What is the hull # of your Comet?

I have some pictures of my Comet "Intrepid" in 1966, but I don't know how to post them.

What were the chances that we get three Narrasketuck alums on this very thread!

See above.  He used to race a Comet there.  Maybe Pat Christy's nemesis?

Adam and Jon, yes, I was a member of Narrasketuck YC when I was in high school, back around 1965-1968. Somewhere in my attic I believe I have the old yearbooks. Correct me if my memory is wrong, but I believe Pat Christy was the one who had a fiberglass Comet (all the others being wood). Her crew was my geometry teacher. I only beat them in one race, and I will never forget because they protested me for having a "non standard" rudder. I withdrew from the race rather than risk failing geometry.

My dad (Owen Brooks) was Commodore there in the 63-65 time-frame, and President of the GSBYRA 68-69.  I would have been a chubby little baby hanging around the Committee Boat!

Adam and I took sailing lessons there together in the late 70's and early 80's.  Dad is still a member at the ripe old age of 87!

That's pretty cool. Funny - nearly 50 years later and Narraskektuck looks exactly the same. I wonder in the age of ketchum if it looked the same? I haven't been a member in 20 years but I swung by a few years ago and it was like I was 12 again...
