Stuart Knockabout parts boat...
« on: August 26, 2013, 06:50:49 PM »
Was exploring the boat junkyard/graveyard that is Fosters Rigging in Quincy, MA Sunday and came across what was once a beautiful Stuart Knockabout - E&D built, named "Whisper". It was apparent she had gone down in a storm as she was baddly damaged - lots of rash, some complete holes in hull, alomost all the woodwork - from the combings to the rub rails to the inlayed stern - is severly damaged. She had NJ numbers so my guess is she's a Sandy total loss boat. She would be a horrific rebuild - and wouldn't be surprised if she's at Foster's for stripping. She seemes all there though - including rig - so if someone out there needs parts...

Adam,
It took me a little while to figure out what the problem was after registering (had to still turn around and log in again...kind of like the 3 turns with stick in hand after blindfolding before making a go at the pinata), as when I found this discussion board I was overjoyed;

When I found this thread, even more so...something along the lines of falling out of my chair!

I'm not sure how often You make it to this boneyard, but I'd gladly pay You for the time and travel if I could get some pictures, although right now I'm guessing:
1-Christmas and New Years' are priorities, and
2-After that it's likely the target subject will be snow covered.

I've been trying to acquire one of these vessels, in this type condition for about 10 years as I'm not a 6 figure boat buyer;
I am however 54 years old and grew up restoring vessels, under the careful eye of a grandfather who had me caulking wood hulls at the ripe old age of 6; fiberglass restoration (although he considered it a sinful invention) is 1 of my specialties and I'd spare no expense to get my hands on this hull and rig if there's any chance they can be saved?

The good news is that I'm in South Florida, and the bad news is that I'm, well, way down here. Getting folks who work at that yard, IF the vessel's still available, to take pictures and then email them is probably a tall order (yes, I've been to the Mass. Coastline formerly, though even then having been from N.C., the nanosecond I opened my mouth I was immediately held in disdain, as apparently, no one fm. S. of the mason-dixon can possibly know anything about sailing, and vessel rehabilitation/maint., etc.?

If anyone else is proximate to this boneyard and would consider this favor, I'll gladly return it for anything I see down here in our yards (of which we have many, most of which I also regularly frequent)?

You can email for my phone number,
respectfully and sincerely,
-Michael

Hi Michael  - I'll see if I can get over there this weekend and take some pics for you. It's been some time since I was by there so don't know if she's still there. Fosters is a pretty big rigging outfit here in the Boston (Quincy MA) area so you might want to give them a call as well. http://www.fosterrigging.com/foster%20rigging/home.html

Thanks Adam,
Actually I'd already called (2x, left 1 message for "Sylvia"  8) ) been all over their website, google earthed their property (while the photo was from 2013, it's probably from earlier in the year than Your original posting), and yes, I agree, they have quite an operation. We have about a dozen riggers in all of Florida and the stink potters outnumber us about 10-12 to 1...oh, well, I'm a guilty multiple power boat owner as well. Been drooling over the SK's since I saw the 1st pic of one for sale on "Sailing Texas" back in '07. E&D built them for a long time w/FG hulls and being in the land of year round wood worms, I'd love to lay my hands on a hull and rig. After that re-fabrication of the brightwork would be a labor of love and considering what the insurance company propably paid for settlement, I'm still nervous (shy the hull broken in half...and i'd STILL be interested) as to what the yard's going to want; most likely it's already gone. I'll keep my fingers crossed & hopefully they'll call me back.
to perhaps make this easier for You, my email I'm guessing You have access to (?), and anytime phone is 3five2-two46-seven4eight3.
Thanks in advance (especially right before Christmas!) for any assistance You can provide locally AND if I get a call back (notifying me that it's either still avail. or long goner, I'll post back here and let You know, fair enough?)

-Michael

Hi Adam
& Thank You for the pics. Was away from the internet or would have responded sooner. I've talked to Paul (landowner and SK owner); he's not terribly serious about selling at the present time.
Happy (& Safe) New Year to You and Yours;
-Mick

I'd give the folks at Ballentine a call and ask them about her.  They're the current builders of this boat, and might give you some useful insight.  Ask for Amy or Tyler and I'm sure they'll tell you everything you need to know!
