Kirk -" Modifications" in all forms are the bane of my Harbor Pilot Quest existence.  I'm beginning to doubt I'll be able to locate the ideal candidate for restoration that my limited budget will allow.  However, I'll continue to look.  From what I've seen so far, most previous owners have installed rod holders, extra cleats, over-powered engines, additional windows, and have modified the stock boat beyond what is reversible or acceptable to me.  I fully understand wanting to personalize a boat for oneself, and each has his own idea as to what's acceptable, but, for me, the closer to "stock", the better I like it.  These, of course, are my own opinions.

Kirk - Your Pilot sounds very interesting - anxious to see the photographs.  I am trying to find a suitable candidate for "easy" restoration, but have had no luck.  Where are you located?

Joe, you've had your skeg all cleaned up - does it appear that the original skeg is through bolted to the keel, or is it screwed into the keel?  I haven't been able to tell either from various pictures I've seen, or an inspection of the Pilot in Brick.

Joe -
What are my chances of finding (or, do you know of) a Herreshoff Harbor Pilot that is in such bad shape that it's been abandoned or its owner is willing to sell its parts?  I may be in need of a replacement bronze rudder skeg - the keel fitting that supports the rudder.  Or, possibly, one that has been temporarily removed that could be used as a pattern for a mold to be cast in bronze.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Good Points - what about rollers for keel support?

Adam, I appreciate your response - can you be more specific?  I've spoken with a trailer dealer who favors rollers over bunks, but I've seen the stress that rollers can place on a hull.  That's something I want to avoid completely.  With respect to bunks, what would you suggest:  1 set, two sets, with or without rollers to support the keel?  Also, for the HHP, what weight limit?  Do you believe a single axle accommodating enough ?  Any insight would be most welcome.  Thanks in advance.

What is felt as the best trailer for the safe transport of a Harbor Pilot?  I'm anticipating one over the road retrieval (300 miles), then occasional launching(s), mostly for off season storage.
Bunks appear to offer the better hull support, while rollers appear to make the "on" and "off" easier.  Mostly, I want to be sure not to damage the hull in transport.  I appreciate your recommendations.

For my 2 cents' worth, I would go either way:  unadulterated as the designer(s) intended - or - an opening port would allow both through-cabin visibility (for the height challenged) & ventilation of the cabin.  In any event, any modifications MUST look professionally done & be in keeping with the character of the boat.  For what it's worth.
