I pre-ordered the new Herreshoff coffee table book at the end of August.  It just came today.  It's loaded with pictures ... real Herreshoff porn.  I hope you enjoy yours.

Interesting  ...  I got mine on Dec. 23rd.  It was very icy here and I have a long driveway.  I was tracking the package, and the UPS website said the book was delivered and left on my front porch.  It wasn't, so I called UPS and Amazon.  It turns out that the package was left at the end of my driveway against a stone pillar because the delivery guy didn't want to negotiate the ice in the driveway, but during the old "customer service shuffle", Amazon offered to credit my account for the missing shipment and re-order the book.  Trouble was, the book was still in the pre-delivery stage and they weren't able to give me a new delivery date.

So ........  it looks like I am one of the lucky few who got the book and you are probably still on a waiting list.

BTW ... the interior of MARIETTE is stunning  ;)

I noticed Amazon lists it as "unavailable", yet WB has it as "In Stock" - although full price. I'm on the edge as to canceling the Amazon order, and just buying at WB.... a small price to pay for convenience - I know "patience is a virtue", but I've never had much use for virtue  ;D .

I got my copy for Christmas, and it really is something. First pictures I've seen of "Elenora", the Westward replica. There are lots of pictures of the NY30 100th anniversary, which I attended.

BTW, Titcomb's bool shop has a couple of copies at 20% off. www.titcombsbookshop.com or 508-888-2331.

Welcome to the forum, Bill.

The interior of Elenora is indeed something, but Mariette ain't no slouch.

A coffee table book it is, indeed. Nice photos, short on substance. But here is a question for the Herreshoff aficionados: On one of the introductory pages (of my 2006 German language edition) the author talks about the S&S Yawl Odyssey having been delivered by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1938 to the duPont family. He even includes two photos of the launch. Question: Which HMCo building number was assigned to Odyssey? (Hint: On one of the launching photos you can read a big sign on a building shed: Minneford Yacht Yard...)

That would have to be hull 1384.  The boat was destroyed while in Padanaram during the 1954 hurricane.

No, no, no! #1384s was Avanti, S&S design no. 85; launched April 11, 1936 for Walter N. Rothschild.

Odyssey is a completely different boat.

Maybe I'm confused - the S&S Odyssey - the 90' maxi yawl built 1938 was built in NY (Nevins) not HMC so why would she have a hull #?. Delivery may have been to HMCo. after but not her building - And it was for a Vanderbilt not a DuPont (Barklie Henry - who I believe also commissioned the HMC 15 footer Alert)...She is now owned by the Boy Scouts (Sea Scouts) on the West coast....I don't have the book yet - so I dont know the pics - but are you talking about these:

Are we talking the same hull? Was there "another" Odyssey? Now there was a much smaller S&S Odyssey - like a 39'er but I think she was in the 40's or 50's - under the CCA rule as far as I know....

Bingo! We have a winner! And you picked the right photos! :-)

Odyssey is Sparkman & Stephens design no. 155. She was launched on October 22, 1938 from Nevins yard on City Island, New York. And she was built for Mrs. Barklie Henry. Nothing to do with Herreshoff. Nothing to do with duPont. Nothing to do with careful research for this Herreshoff coffee table book, either.

And, as you say, Odyssey is still with us: http://www.sssodyssey.org/shiphistorypics.html

It wouldn't have been so difficult for the author to find out himself.

You are also right about W. Barklie Henry. The Herreshoff Manufacturing Company built for him two boats, the Watch Hill 15 Alert #886s, and the Fisher's Island 31 Cyrilla IV #1054s. Odyssey was built for his (then) wife Barbara.

Do I win something? ;D

Question for you two - it is noted that the 15 footer Alert was never picked up by Henry  and it was sold to R. S. Aldrich instead. Why?

Nice work on the Odyssey question.

As regards Alert, I can only assume Henry cancelled the order after the boat was started, and Aldrich was the next customer to order one.

Alert, btw, is in bad shape and is awaiting someone to buy and restore her.
