I want to take a POLL - Herreshoff Harbor Pilot bulk head wall ....

1) - keep the original look of the pilot bulk head wall ( no Window installation ) ?

OR

2) - Install  my old Classic looking Bronze Port Hole Window in the Pilot bulk head wall ?

VOTE .... Original vs Port Hole ....  Thanks You !  Cardinal Joe

Joe:  Without a mock up picture I really can't comment.  But, it's your boat and I trust you will make the right judgment.

As an aside, you're work on this 18 has been inspiring.  Given your effort to restore this fine craft and others willingness to take on similar projects there is certainly a propensity for the design and perhaps new examples of these boats should again be manufactured.  Would you ever considering building new 18's from scratch?  Best,  Adam L.

1.   Adam – been there done that …..   Donald L Blount & Steve French  both Naval Architects and Marine Engineers design a 66 & 40 foot Sport Fish Hull for Cardinal Yacht Sales Marina – Sold off the 66 ft hull and still own the  DeSanti 40 XPS Custom Express …..
2.   What I would consider, is purchasing Herreshoff Harbor Pilot or Yacht Launch that is in need of Restoration and Re-selling ……
3.   Or open my shop to restore other Herreshoff owner’s boats ……….

Joe -
What are my chances of finding (or, do you know of) a Herreshoff Harbor Pilot that is in such bad shape that it's been abandoned or its owner is willing to sell its parts?  I may be in need of a replacement bronze rudder skeg - the keel fitting that supports the rudder.  Or, possibly, one that has been temporarily removed that could be used as a pattern for a mold to be cast in bronze.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Joe - The original skeg was deemed too worn to be serviceable, so it was removed, pressure treated lumber was sandwiched together, bolted to the keel, and a replacement skeg (not the original) was bolted to that.

The Bottom Rudder Pintle should be through the keel hole an be free Willie ..... That is Just Horrible looking , it is not the orginial bronze keel that came with the Herreshoff Harbor pilot !

Joe, you've had your skeg all cleaned up - does it appear that the original skeg is through bolted to the keel, or is it screwed into the keel?  I haven't been able to tell either from various pictures I've seen, or an inspection of the Pilot in Brick.

I am a Harbor Pilot owner too.  Mine is a factory custom I call a "Commodore" model..bigger cabin with seat steering and sink. Only one I have ever seen. I will take some photos to show you.

Always nice to meet another lover of the Harbor Pilot.

Kirk.

Kirk - Your Pilot sounds very interesting - anxious to see the photographs.  I am trying to find a suitable candidate for "easy" restoration, but have had no luck.  Where are you located?

I am on lake Chautauqua in western NY. My pilot came from north shore of Long Island where it was once used by a yacht club. Last owner trailered it to Mobile, Alabama where he had it in water for a season ...I found it listed on ebay and could not take my eyes off it. Has dual helms. one inside and one outside. Cabin comes all way back to behind dog house engine cover that acts as settee. Very nice teak detail in and out, but needs some TLC. Diesel engine was pulled out at some time and replaced with a mercruser 120 with hurth reduction tranmission so they had to make engine compartment bigger. Looks and pulls like a little tug. Hydrolic steering added at some time too. Wish I had more time to work on it than I do. I will go down to my barn and pull it out to take some photos. It was mentioned in a cat forum on Pilots a few years back by previous owner and some thought it was a remodel job. However if you look closely it looks like detail work was done in Bristol RI. Builders plate and all. I have my eyes on  little Yanmar 18hp that I can get to put back in it. The Merc is too much power.

I also have another project boat. A Bill Menger 23' cat boat Launch. One of only 3, custom made for a Yacht Club on Hudson. Has a 28hp Yanmar Diesel in it.

Kirk -" Modifications" in all forms are the bane of my Harbor Pilot Quest existence.  I'm beginning to doubt I'll be able to locate the ideal candidate for restoration that my limited budget will allow.  However, I'll continue to look.  From what I've seen so far, most previous owners have installed rod holders, extra cleats, over-powered engines, additional windows, and have modified the stock boat beyond what is reversible or acceptable to me.  I fully understand wanting to personalize a boat for oneself, and each has his own idea as to what's acceptable, but, for me, the closer to "stock", the better I like it.  These, of course, are my own opinions.
