Custom Herreshoff Harbor Pilot

This is the pilot bought years ago! Where did you find these old photos. Still trying to learn about the factory design custom job. It was a factory job. No question. Engine compartment was modified for gas engine, but everything else looks original build.
Kirk.

I bought it from Sonny Brewer from Fairhope, Alabama in 2005. He had posted it on Ebay..but nobody bid. I saw it up there, and after the auction ended...could not stop thinking about it so I contacted him and made an offer.  He had found it a year earlier in Cold Spring Harbor, NY. Listed by Ted of Long Island Marine on behalf of Hewitt Lindsay. Beyond that is speculation, but heard tale of it being a Yacht Club Race Comittee boat at one time. The folks at Long Island Marine almost bought it themselves to use as a tow boat. Heard it was the Yacht Club that changed out engine to give it more power.

It is a 1978, Made by Squadron Yachts in Bristol Rhode Island with bronze builders plate and all. Both I and the former owner believe it to be a custom factory job not listed in standard models brochures. You will too once you see the workmanship in the details. The only obvious remuddle was the replacement of the diesel with a 120hp merc. w reduction. The Hydrolic dual helms look original.

Did you take a look at the Youtube slide show?
Told you about all I know in my earlier posts. Do you have any questions I could try to answer? Have you ever seen a 18' like this? I have a folder with a little information from last two owners, but that is about it. I would love to know more myself.

I am on lake Chautauqua in western NY. My pilot came from north shore of Long Island where it was once used by a yacht club. Last owner trailered it to Mobile, Alabama where he had it in water for a season ...I found it listed on ebay and could not take my eyes off it. Has dual helms. one inside and one outside. Cabin comes all way back to behind dog house engine cover that acts as settee. Very nice teak detail in and out, but needs some TLC. Diesel engine was pulled out at some time and replaced with a mercruser 120 with hurth reduction tranmission so they had to make engine compartment bigger. Looks and pulls like a little tug. Hydrolic steering added at some time too. Wish I had more time to work on it than I do. I will go down to my barn and pull it out to take some photos. It was mentioned in a cat forum on Pilots a few years back by previous owner and some thought it was a remodel job. However if you look closely it looks like detail work was done in Bristol RI. Builders plate and all. I have my eyes on  little Yanmar 18hp that I can get to put back in it. The Merc is too much power.

I also have another project boat. A Bill Menger 23' cat boat Launch. One of only 3, custom made for a Yacht Club on Hudson. Has a 28hp Yanmar Diesel in it.

Always nice to meet another lover of the Harbor Pilot.
